Ready for planting?

These are a couple of my balcony corn and sunflower starts. These will be headed to the preschool, where I'll have the kids help me plant them. I think I've found a place where the kids won't trample them during (sometimes rowdy) free play. Wish us luck!

@marguicha I wonder if the lessons of gardening will "stick" for the poor kids I worked with in Oakland.

California is weird. The hills are still green, but often they're yellow by now.

Those are gorgeous! I wish more adults would help the younger generation like you do.

I remember gardening from my elementary school years. It was one of my favorite things we did.

@TheHorse I wish the schools where I live did more gardening. Heck, the churches should have public gardens for the hungry. That would walk their talk.

The plants are of different length. Do you have a separate nursery for those plants?

No. I have decent soil and problematic sun at the preschool.

@mlgen1037 We got the sunflowers planted today. I may bring the corn tomorrow. Or maybe I'll let the two plants it get bigger (and more slug-resistant) and bring them in next week.

Looking good. I just buried a bunch of leggy potatoes. If they take, fine, if not, then they'll feed the soil. What's the can of rustoleum for?

Buy planters and have a garden on your balcony or front porch!

I was ready to plant, yesterday it was sunny and hot, I thought the nice weather was here to stay. Well, it's cold today. I should know better that we have to wait until Mid-May.

@TheHorse Well, it is the difference in temperature that damages the crops. Yesterday in the 80s, today low 50s, the tomatoes stop to grow.

How cold is cold? Our nighttime lows have been in the 40s the last few days, not cold enough to damage anything.

That is so neat that you have the kids helping you. Kids like doing what the "big people" do. It is so hot here already that I only last about and hour outside. I have been gardening in my screen room all winter and started a lot from seeds then moved them to the yard as they got bigger. It is a year round hobby.

Sounds good to me. I actually had some corn that survived the Winter. But it basically looks like grass. We have some sunflowers at the preschool that are about 5' tall right now. And some of the corn is doing well too.

@TheHorse If they help you plant them, maybe they'll take 'ownership' and look after them better.
