If so, what are your precautions. How do you handle your food. My hubby is having and not controlling his diet. I am worried. He says he doesnt feel anything so I dont have to worry.

my granddaughter who is 3 has had diabetes type 1 for the past year, her pancreas does not work at all,so she will be insulin dependant all her life. you do need to watch what he eats, not sugary things, luckily for my granddaughter she is so young that she does not know anything else. she has insulin 3 times a day now.i hope things work out for you and your husband there is a lot of help now available for diabetes, so do not despair. good luck

Gosh I dont know what to say. This really broke my heart. I dont know why small children get this type of sicknesses. She's so young and dont know anything. I'll include her in my prayers and hope her organs would heal some way or the other. Thanks a lot for sharing this.

Thank you for such a lovely response. The doctors think that it may have been caused by a viral infection, but nobody can say for sure. I hope that one day they will find a cure, or for jenny (my granddaughter) maybe an artificial pancreas (who knows, maybe one day). I hope things work out for you, Take care :)

My mother-in-law is known as Insulin champion. She is 70 and from the age of 35 she has been diabetic. My father-in-law is a doctor and because of his care, she is in one piece. As I learnt from them, the following are important: 1. Periodic check up of blood-sugar 2. There is another test (bit expensive) blood and urine test which can tell story for last 6 months. 3. Physician's guidelines are important particularly in suggesting latest tablets. 4. Food control is very important, keep away fatty foods, cholesterol inviting foods (oil-based). 5. Drink lot of water 6. Eat protein based foods and vegetables 7.More important is to burn cabohydrates with rigorous exercises - best is jogging, if age does not permit, brisk walk and swimming is wonderful. Diabetic is not fully curable, but can be kept in check.

Thanks a lot for info. He is going to be 40 coming January. I think he had this for the last 4-5 yrs. He was losing weight and we checked (4yrs ago) and his glucose level was 395!!! Can you imagine? The doctor gave him medicines and he was alright after that. Now he is not taking any medicines and is careful of his diet (most of the time LOL) He never let me check his glucose (I have a monitor at home) he's scared of needles!! Last week I somehow checked and he was 220. Its too much. Now my only wish is I'd be somehow able to convince him to see a doctor before the end of this year.

Hi sherinek. I'm sorry to hear of your husband's ailment. I'm sorrier to hear he is not taking care of that. Telling anyone 'not to worry' is not going to stop the worry. Taking care of the problem is going to stop the worry. You can tell your husband I said that I think him foolish not to have this problem checked. My father always has said to me, "Hershe, if you don't have your health, you have nothing." I believe this to be a true statement. Good luck to you both.

Thanks and thanks again for feeling for me. You know its very difficult to convince him about this. He is careful of his food like, not taking sugar or candy items, eating only red rice etc. But he doesnt want to do anything more than that. Sometimes in the night, I just cant sleep thinking about him. I'm scared of him. You can imagine the pressure. He is so scared of the needle and so he doesnt want to get himself checked. I have a glucose monitor at home and when I want to check him even he's scared that I'd hurt him. I really dont know how to handle him

I do hope that you can get your husband to understand that it is essential that he take care of his health, and that means monitoring his sugar levels through tests sherinek. Do a search on the web and print out what you find then give it to him to read. It might make him listen and act, because although it might not be a serious problem now, it is what happens in the long term. Diabetes can do damage to internal organs, so he should be extremely careful. Good luck and I hope you can convince him to take the tests for his own sake as well as that of his children.

Thanks ossie. Thats my only wish as well. He is ignorant cos he doesnt feel any thing that other diabetic patients feel. So he thinks he's alright. But last week I somehow made him check his blood, and it was 220. When we first checked sometime back (about 2 yrs) it was 390, can you imagine. He is careful of his food. But still I am not at ease. Before end of this year, I must drag him to see a doctor.

Well, I have been Diabetic now myself for quite a few yrs. Many of these were not too bad, and I needed very little help to keep things under control. Then I ended up hurting myself and getting a Chronic wound that took yrs. to get healed up, and almost ended up with me loosing my leg. The Best suggestion I can share for you with your husband, is to make sure he is seeing a Doctor that really knows about Diabetes in general, and will be willing to work with him and you, and answer any Questions you might have. Find out what is the best foods, etc. and make sure his Blood sugar levels are under control. If you have too, do a search in Yahoo groups for some Good Diabetic groups. If you need to talk anymore or need other advice feel Free to add me to your Friends list, and Ask me anything you need help on.

Thanks a lot for your kind words. That's what I am trying to do myself. Drag him to see a doctor. Every time he has some excuse and unfortunately, they are valid reasons. But I some how will take him before the end of the year.
