Poundland ( your dollar store) is likely to close most of its branches in the United Kingdom. When cheap stores like this go under you have to wonder what the hell is going on. It could be Brexit related but I also feel they were charging a pound for more and more stuff that was only worth 75 pence and punters got wise. But I also feel younger people are becoming more health and money conscious and coupled by a minimum wage economy created by high immigration from Europe the simply watch every penny so they can pay their rent, 50% of many peoples wages now. In essence retail capitalism is dieing because people don't buy much crap anymore and that's a big problem.
We have seen Amazons profits rocket every year and as they pay no tax anywhere smaller retail , who do pay tax, simply cant compete with them. Amazon are too big and powerful for governments to try and tax them , and if they do try, Amazon and the like employ the government tax people who write the tax code. I'm afraid the mega a corporations are the new governments and by the people rebelling against their products will only hurt the people.
Robots will increasingly take out jobs and more and more money will be stuffed into tax havens. We tried to fight back with Brexit to cut labor flow from Europe but it wont push up our wages by much, and big business is trying to overthrow the Brexit vote to keep that cheap labor. Two robots at IKEA managed to assemble a flat-pack chair in 19 minutes that humans are supposed to able to do in 11 minutes but that gap is closing. Once those robots do it quicker we are done.

Young people these days are foolish with no concept of financial responsibility. They order toothpaste online from Amazon instead of paying a buck at a dollar store.

I do not think this has anything to do with Brexit. I think it has to do with many cheap stores popping up on the internet people buy from instead of physical brick and mortor stores. I could not afford things at dollar stores even so i started to shop at times at wish.com sometimes they have really cheap items including shipping and handling other times its good affordable... So i do not think it is Brexit causing it. I think it is because people are finding better deals and sources to turn to, or starting to buy in bulk more.

Interesting. Didn't know you had pound stores. In the US, dollar stores thrive so I don't see the reasons stated as cause for pound store closing. We are overwhelmed with immigrants and dollar stores are vital cheap places to shop. The US is obsessed with health conscious which no affect on business at dollar stores. Being money conscious has driven people to buying at dollar stores where you can get practical items like sundries. In fact only a small portion of goods could be deemed "crap." You are so correct about robots etc. People haven't grasped that the modern technology they love so much is killing jobs and down the line will have a devastating effect.
