No red doors here this morning. We are at #32b, the "cover" portion of this morning's Play it Again, Sam: Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black."
If there was such a thing as an 80's Alternative Music Hall of Fame, Echo and the Bunnymen would be a first ballot entry, as far as I'm concerned. Vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant, bassist Les Pattinson, and drummer Pete DeFreitas (R.I.P.) put out some of the finest alternative music of that decade, including this little known cover of "Paint it Black."
This live version of The Stones' classic was originally released as a B-Side song on the 12 Inch single of the Bunnymen's 1987 "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo" single (my second favorite Echo and the Bunnymen song!) and was also the B-Side of their 1987 12" release of their cover of The Doors' "People are Strange," which they recorded for the classic 80's vampire film, The Lost Boys. "Paint it Black" is also available on New Live and Rare, a 1988 Japanese EP.
"Paint it Black," as befitting such a classic, has been covered numerous times, notably by Eric Burden and War, who had a Dutch hit with it at #31, the Avengers, The Standells, The London Symphony Orchestra, Flamin' Groovies, Tracey Ullman, Deep Purple, U2, The Residents, Ottmar Liebert, The Tea Party, Vanessa Carlton, and Ministry.

B-Side from the Bedbugs & Ballyhoo 12" single. Track recorded live in Gothenburg, Sweden for the Bommen Show on Swedish National Radio. Watch in HD. Enjoy

Great live band, too. I've seen them three times, including with New Order and Gene Loves Jezebel at Red Rocks!
