Decorating On The Cheap

I have been looking for a new comforter set for my king size bed for months. The set that I have came with the bed when I inherited it back in 2015 and I knew it was about two years old then but its expensive and made to last, my problem is that its a dry clean only comforter and its time for me to change up.
I have checked the cheaper stores and their new summer stock are in but all of them are still priced around $80 for a king size. The winter clearance is around $50 and I did not want any dark winter colors that were offered.
A tenant sent me to one of the new stores in town that I have not been into, they have been there for less than a year, "Roses" is the name, but that was for something Tony had been wanting. When I got there I noticed how cheap the prices were, same merchandise as walmart and a couple other of the cheap stores.
I seen comforters so I took a look, WOW! the prices are cheap, I seen a pattern that I liked and I bought an 8 piece set for ..... drum roll, $29.99! The set includes the king size comforter, two shams, bed skirt and a set of sheets with pillow cases! And the best part for me its machine washable so I don`t have to pay $30 to $50 to have it dry cleaned.
Wait, I am not finished......
The curtains. The curtains I had with the other comforter were a golden tan color, I say golden because to me there was a hint of gold (yellow) that matched the trim and part of the design of the old conforter. Even with the new one I could use the same curtains because the pattern is gold and gray on a white background.
And then I was at Walmart yesterday, getting tires. I looked over at the curtain area and .... Yes I did!
I bought two sets of curtains, not black outs but one step before black outs, they are gray but the price is the best part, $9.98 for each set! Usually I pay $10 per panel or I make my own for about $10 per panel.
So, I got new bedroom decor for $50!
It does pay to look around and not just buy at one place. Next is a $10 gallon of white paint for this room. Hmm, I am wondering if I can find new lamps After all I am still under budget of the original price for just the comforter!
Can you decorate something and it does not look cheap?

That was a great price on the bedding. We have a couple of stores that I always check first for that kind of stuff. My favorite of them is called Ollies

@andriaperry We dont have a Roses but do have Big Lots, it used to be Odd Lots. Since they changed names they are more in line with stores like WalMart on pricing

You can buy some green lamp shades with white light that will go well with white paint.

Yes they are but walmart has new pricing on the "Mainstay" brand. These have the backing that looks just like the expensive drapes/ curtains. And its a pair for $9.98 that was the good thing about them.

@Ithink I am going to make my sister a small set of curtains for a little window she has over her sink. I may have enough fabric to do that now, she cannot sew anything.

Oh yes. I love cheap sheets but they're always in white. Nobody could go wrong in white beddings. They would always look classy.

@andriaperry Right, the pillows can do those. But nothing beats the sophistication of white linens. But white linens are always expensive here so I usually buy then when they're on sale. The printed ones are so cheap though. You can get a set for the printed ones for only $10 for a king size. I have a king size bed. That includes two pillow cases, one fitted sheet, and one flat sheet.

I sure can, I just got two new lamps for my bedroom, a new tablecloth for the dining room, two sets of six each of summer themed glasses and two Portmerion serving pieces all for nothing. I have $100 worth of certificates that I get as rewards on the TJMaxx credit card. I got my last two Laura Ashley comforter sets from Overstock.com but not for as good a price as you paid.

@andriaperry I fully agree, it is not necessary to spend a fortune. Plastic looks cheap.

I ran into a sale like that at Kmart last spring. King size comforter, pillows and pillow shams for about $30.... Then down the next aisle black out curtains that matched $5 per panel. Now they are on my guest bed...I'll hang the curtains next week.

Yes, I decorated our front bedroom and used inexpensive curtains and a bedspread. Nope, it doesn't look cheap, it's beautiful!

I got just the comforter set I wanted last year from a buy sell trade site. The woman had only used it to "stage" her bedroom to sell the house. I can do like you did. Another thing you could do for the old comforter is buy two flat sheets and sew them into a duvet cover to keep it clean on the outside. You could then just air it on the clothesline instead of dry cleaning and machine wash the cover.

Good Job! I am familiar with Roses. I should look there for a chaise lounge cushion. I was thinking I would like another one, and or a firepit.

We used to have a Roses store here. that's cool you got good deals for everything. I would like to get a comforter too. Not for a bed though. My uncle had bought a comforter for my mother's air mattress when she lived with me. My fiance now uses the comforter when he comes to visit. It is looking a little worn now.

I liked these because they are light but still warm when needed. Perfect for the summer.

It needs it. The darker colors were beginning to get boring.
