After a bit of a break I'm back...Time to guess those songs and artists.
A video classic from the Beatles to introduce our ladies whose names begin with an M. Here is Paul's ballad "Michelle." The song evolved over Paul's pretending to be French at college parties. A friend of John's whose wife was French helped with the lyrics. The song was off the Rubber Soul album and was a Grammy Winner for the Beatles in 1966.
So, enjoy this beautiful tune and ponder the clues below. Do you know the answers?
1. This tune charted at # 9 in 1961. The track was off the 'Rick is 21" LP. In the song's lyrics the guy gets a case of love at first sight, as she steals his heart at first glance. It's a very simple tune but quite memorable, with 14 mentions of this sweet lady's name. Gene Pitney was one of the credited writers. Fun fact: Pitney recorded some huge hits in his own right, "Only Love Can Break A Heart" and "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance." Pitney also wrote some hits for other artists, including "He's A Rebel" for The Crystals and "Rubber Ball" for Bobby Vee. Pitney had recorded this song but never released it. A good fortune for our mystery artist whose version became a huge hit. BTW- This artist was a teen idol on a hit TV family series in the 50's.
2. This was one of the first songs the band recorded without their famous guitarist and founder, who died in a motorcycle accident about four months before it was released. The song was dedicated to him. It was his favorite song. Story has it the title of this girl song came about when the writer was at a grocery store, and heard a Spanish lady call out her daughter by name. The lyrics mention a crossroads, gypsy and this sweet lady. Fun fact: The band helped Jimmy Carter get elected in 1976 by playing benefit concerts to raise money for his campaign. They both hail from the same state.
3. The artist of this Bayou sounding band originally wrote this song about a woman who works as a maid for rich people. But when he wrote the music, he made the first few chords evoke a riverboat paddlewheel going around. Thus, the song went from being a cleanup lady to a boat. Funfact: This was the first of five singles by this band that went to #2 on the US chart; they have the most #2 songs without ever having a #1.
You might recognize the opening lyrics of this famous Rock song:
Left a good job in the city, Workin' for the man ev'ry night and day.
Ike & Tina Turner's recorded version charted at #4 in 1971.
Song and artist Honorable Mention- "Good Golly Miss Molly/Little Richard"
The title was taken from the pet phrase of one of Little Richard's favorite DJ's, Jimmy Pennick. Miss Molly sure liked to ball (a 1958 term for dancing).
There is our musical trivia today for M-named girl songs Part 1. Good luck and use those clues!
If your stuck and need additional clues just let me know in your response. Glad to throw a few more hints your way and aid "your search of that lost chord" or in this case a forgotten song.

You know that the Statler Brothers made a country hit out of Ozzie’s kid’s hit.
I always think of Tim Wilson, who’d impersonate Gregg by singing that song...by singing it while putting his eye, not his mouth, at the microphone. He’d joke about how Gregg did a little too much “stuff” back then: “Groupies were saying, ‘we know Gregg. Ma’am? Gregg doesn’t even know his own bass player!”
Even 50 years later I still can’t believe CCR never got to #1. Tina sure sang the fire out of that, though, didn’t she!!
And, for a good laugh, listen to the eight seconds of Martin Mull singing “Michelle” on I’m Everybody That I’ve Ever Loved.

@dgobucks226 — they were named from a box of tissues. Harold and Don Reid are brothers but the other guys aren’t related. Glad they didn’t go into an A&P or the might have been the 8 O’Clock Coffee Brothers!

Enjoyed the comments. I did not know about the Statler Bros country hit But their vocal harmonies made them a superstar country group. They did justice to that tune! I read they were named after a brand of tissues???? And they are not brothers???? Wow Nice story on Greg! Yes, shocking that CCR never had a #1 hit I remember Marty from various TV shows, very funny comedian.
Thought you might enjoy listening to this again... Love that pedal steel!!!!
Named after a brand of tissues, the four members of the Statler Brothers did not in fact share a fraternal bond; what they did share, however, was the distin...

# 1 and # 3 are correct!!! Here is another clue- He was briefly married to Cher and they had a son Elijah Blue. Not Sonny Bono. This Southern band whose Albums included Eat A Peach which included this song, and Live at the Fillmore East, had another very familiar song called "Rambling Man."
Partial lyric to today's mystery tune:
Lord, in his deepest dreams the gypsy flies
With sweet ( M-girl's name?)
Mm, hmm

I think that @JohnRoberts gave the correct responses. A song for M-named girls? Well, Marlene by Demis Roussos (1974). I loved that singer.
