I'm from the south, and I've never heard of anyone using baking soda to make sweet tea. But in reading the comments below I see that there is a legitimate reason for it. Hmmm...I never knew! Guess I learned something new today!

My aunt used to add a pinch of baking soda to her sweet tea and she was legendary. I've never done it, though and my tea is delicious.

@Tina30219 I love the fruit flavored tea in restaurants, but I make my own. I just make sweet tea as usual and add some orange juice and/or lemonade.

Baking soda in tea? I wonder if this produces a tiny bit of carbonation, in this drink.

@Tina30219 Making this tea less bitter and smoother, that's what others have found.

I had no idea, despite reading the recipe given by you, till I have seen the responses here by friends that it helps in reducing reducing the bitterness of the tea! Thank a lot@Tina30219 for adding some thing new to my knowledge!

First time I've heard about baking soda being added to tea. Looked it up online and it says that baking soda takes out the bitterness in tea.
