Automated recording call ... Press 2 to be removed - is that the best solution?

I had the option not to pick up the phone when an unknown call came in on our landline phone. But today I wanted to actually see who was at the other end or at least listen to what they were saying. I did this and it was an automated recording saying they do air duct cleaning and we don't have central air so that wouldn't apply to us, then the recording said I could PRESS 2 TO BE REMOVED. so I pressed 2. And the message said, THANKYOU. and I hung up. But - ? Was this a con? Should I not have pressed the no. 2 button on my landline phone key pad? What if they are a group of con artists who get people to opt out of future calls by pressing 2 but only get placed on a larger con artists or phone scammer listing? I will Google this to find out more. OOps! Well, according to the article, below my post, I should not have even bothered to press the no. 2 button on my landline phone. I am advised, based on the information from this linked article below, I should not even pick up the phone at all. It's a loose-loose situation no matter what option I pick Maybe the phone itself is the problem Or does the telephone company like providing Caller ID for people like myself, who only end up paying more each month for a phone bill and getting such caller ID messages from such robocalls as UNKNOWN CALLER, 1-888-BAD-LUCK !!

If I don't know the number i won't pick the phone up! These cold callers are a nuisance. We can register not to receive such calls the company can be fined if they disturb you!

If only, If only I could fine them for it. I would be as rich as the Donald.

I have two options: 1. Give out my old landline phone number, which was disconnected a year ago. Enjoy that call, telemarketers. 2. See a number on my phone I don't recognize, send it immediately to voice mail. If they leave a message it's legit. If they don't, the number is blocked. One thing I know for certain: that "do not call list" is a joke.

I wish I could block on my landline. We only have the option of blocking 35 numbers. That list was filled up years ago.

@akalinus -- I agree, they need to update the limit of blocking. Of course, more and more people are getting away from landlines, so they aren't exactly in a hurry to keep customers. But you're right, that landline blocking list needs to be at least 100 numbers long!!!

@FourWalls I have a cell phone but the landline is bundled with the internet and I would pay more to get rid of it. I use it for calling friends and family talking for a long time.

Pressing a number only tells the scammer that someone is there and the phone is working. I make it my policy to never answer the phone for numbers I don't know. I have a message machine for the important calls I miss. The rest just get deleted.

@lookatdesktop I get them too. I even got one from a politician who says he is fighting against robocalls. I don't answer my phone anymore. It is sad that has to be that way.

I get 50 robocalls a week. It is just insanity.

I have done that before as well, and I still get the calls. Now I don't answer any calls unless I know the number, if its important they can leave a message.

I might just unplug the phone all week until I need it to make a call out.

Like I told another myLotter in this discussion, If I could opt for call blocker for up to 100 or 1000 callers, I might be able to put a dent into the situation or unplug my phone for a week and that way the callers might get fed up getting nowhere as they are getting nowhere at my expense and headaches if I keep the phone line plugged in 24/7. Maybe I could just buy a QCOM or a SATPHONE.

@lookatdesktop You did not know who was at the other end and wanted to find out. If it is someone I do not want to talk to or a recording I just hang up. People do what they think is the right thing and that is what you did. I hope they will not bother you again or others.
