Do dreams have anything to do with reality?

We often dream about various things while slumbering that have little resemblance to our daily activities. Like I dreamt yesterday that I am canoeing on the nearby lake whereas I have never done that activity anytime before. Does dream have anything to do with our real life or it is just our subconscious mind?
