I was going through my dad old stuffs and I saw some old cassette. One caught me eye and that was Teletubbies, I pulled out the old VCR player to my surprise is was still working. And had to watch it, that was one of my favorite kiddies show when I was growing up. Something came running to my mind, why do they always repeat the words the narrator do say? Why does tinky winky have a handbag? Why does dipsy have a hat and when he/she wears it, dancing begins? Why does lala have a ball and does nothing with it? What sex are they? which is male and which is female?
Do you have an idea???

I always thought they were boys. My younger son, loved the Teletubbies when he was a toddler and young boy. He liked the red one "Po" and I bought a stuffed Po for him when he was 3 and he played with it and carried it around a lot. He is 22 years old now and that stuffed Po is still in his closet. It was one of his prized & loved toys.

I have never seen the program so cannot tell you. They are really cute though. It looks like a family to me.

@Tutufaith I was not a kid when I watched them but a grandmother. I think I bought all of them as they made everyone happy.

Tinky Winky and Dipsy are male (in spite of Tinky Winky's bag, which looks like a handbag but is actually a magic bag, being bigger inside than it is outside). La-la and Po are female. Actually, it doesn't really matter because, for the pre-school audience the series is aimed at, gender is secondary and most children of that age accept such fictional characters as they are.

I loved, loved, loved the Teletubbies. I use to watch my grandsons when this was popular and we would dance around the living room and the boys would dance and I would be right with them.
Isn't it funny how they had no gender and I don't think it bothered anyone. I never heard anyone asking. I remember sometimes the kids would say which one they liked better, (color wise). It made no difference to them or me. Why can't life be as simple as that and not decide on who we like more, either by gender or color or nationality.

@Tutufaith At least you were a kid and enjoyed them. I was a grandmother and loved watching it with my grandsons. We use to dance all around the living room.

I also loved it when I was a kid, if you want me to be quiet just play it for me and I will be very very quiet with my eyes glued to the screen

@Tutufaith Tinky-Winky ( Purple ) is a boy. He carries a handbag just because lol I don't know why but it's not an issue. Dipsy ( Green ) is a boy. Laa Laa ( Yellow ) is a girl. And Po ( red ) is also a girl.
