Homemade Tick Spray I made.

I Said I would write about it when I had it made, and here I have it made. If the photo worked, you will see me holding the bottle. I may make up another one, I haven't yet decided. I didn't do exact measurements of it, just filled it a little here and a little there. It smells like a flora viniagerette because of the ACV I used. ACV Lemon Thyme Hydrosol 20 drops Geranium E.O. Water. I shook this up and sprayed it, and it smells really very good, but like I said before, it smells like a salad dressing because of the vinegar. I will spray this on my hair, my cuff's on my clothing (both shirt and pant) and on my shoes. There are other essential oils that you can consider. Lemongrass, Cedarwood and Eucalyptus being just a few. I chose the ones I did because I wanted to be able to use them agai and again and I can definitely do that with my geranium oil. I need to make up a little bit of soap to take with me, and so I may place a few drops of geranium in it just for that added bit of protection from the bugs.

Have you already tried it? Is it effective? I have heard that it's a bad year for ticks, there are plenty.

I have been hearing that a lot as well. That's one reason why I wanted to make some up. Yes it was effective, of course we had tiki torches set out as well. Next time I might buy a citronella candle and burn it for the picnic area though.

@LadyDuck I would like to sit outside on the front porch more but I can't with all the bugs that like to come around. Ideally I would get some screen and a screen door for the porch but the porch is so small I don't think it would be worth it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The only problem of staying outside in the evening are those horrible bugs.

That is something very interesting...is it equally effective against the bed bugs too? Thanks!

@ScribbledAdNauseum , Thanks a lot for the information! Some relatives of mine who are now students in US are having this bed bug problem with them and they are helpless as the agencies who deal with them are demanding too much which is beyound their budget! Thanks again!

I am sorry but I do not know. I have read that steaming helps get rid of them, but as for keeping them away? I am not sure. I made this more for ticks than any other kind of bug.

@AKRao24 It sounds as if they are in student housing? I would think it would be the problem of the person in charge of housing and not the student's themselves.

I am glad that it worked for you. I haven't had the time to try to make any yet.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That would be great if you could make one that is safe for pets. I bet you could sell them too.

@velvet53 I am sure I could. There are plenty of pet owners around.

I did the research over a couple of days and then started to buy the stuff. I ended up making it up the night before I went to stay with my friends, so two days before the actual trip. I would like to try different recipes / combinations and eventually perhaps develop one that will be safe for pets and help keep ticks away.

@infatuatedbby Now I just want to master one for my best friend's dogs and cats. Ok, well, more for the dogs than the cats. The cats stay indoors.

Thank you, it worked out very well. We did have some other means of repelling bugs.

Do you encounter many ticks where you live?
• United States

No, not necessarily. I am going camping this weekend, and that is why I have made this.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That is certainly a good idea.

@MALUSE Yes, I want to be as safe as possible since we will potentially be hiking and not just sitting around a camp fire.

You think it will work for bed bugs?

I wouldn't know, but it might.

@Friendlypink I've read that steaming helps get rid of those. Washing the bedding and then steaming the mattress, but I don't know about preventing them.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I have read alot of DIY insect and bug sprays but none in particular for bed bugs. Cause according to some articles it is really the hardest to eliminate.

I've been and gone. It held up pretty well. We did have tiki torches and stayed more inside of netting, but still overall I would make the same batch again. It worked well.

I have used a tick spray someone gave me and it was all natural ingredients. It did not repel ticks but instead it attracted the flies. When I use store bought repellant with Deet in it that hasn't worked either. We are overrun with ticks here in PA and we are magnets for them.

This one worked for me, though ti might have also been the combination of tiki torches and being inside of the tent or under the netted shelter.

Cedarwood essential oil is another good one for ticks. I hope you can get all the ingredients you need and good luck.

It was very effective for me. There are plenty of other essential oils that I've read are recommended, but the ones I used did the job.
