Less hours but still 6 days

It doesn’t seem like much but when I work 6 days, I spend $26.40 on bus fare. More if I have to take an Uber because I work too early for the buses to run. My job has recently cut one of the positions that I know: that of “dining room” which means I clean the floors, bathrooms, keep the coffees and drink stations clean and stocked.
So mostly I’m a cashier now. That’s fine and dandy because it’s much less work to be the closing or mid day cashier than it is to work dining room, but I need to pay my bills. Spending so much time traveling for short 4 hour shifts is not my idea of a good time. I think it may be time to search for a new job or at the very least a second job.

I will definitely remain hard working, but I’m not sure that I’m doing well there. I need to learn more positions to ensure I get my full time hours

Well I can’t make money if I don’t work. But it is frustrating to know that it takes a 4 hour shift plus my commute to pay for the full week of travel. It is what it is though. I have to do what it takes to get the household taken care of

@porwest I would have to learn to drive first. I’ve made it til almost 40 without driving mostly because I grew up in NYC. We are no longer in NYC. Lol

@acrogodess Agreed. I know a car can be expensive, but if you can muster the right amount of money and get one at a good price that will last years, eventually it might pay for itself.

My boss knows that I need the hours. I’m supposed to be full time but corporate has cut one of the positions which means less hours

Well I got called in early today so I’ll get a few extra hours. This should put me slightly over 30 by tomorrow

I can relate to your situation. I think 4 hour shifts are a waste of time. Hours have been cut where I work and they started giving me 4 hour shifts, so I told another department that if they needed me I could work for them after I am done in my department or if I have an extra day off I will work for them. Anything to get more hours because I can't live on less than 30 hours.

Exactly, I need at least 32 hours to pay my bills. 27 hours isn’t worth it

@acrogodess I only had 24.5 hours this week even though the one that does the schedule told me she was trying to find me some more hours. I was able to pick up five more hours but that still isn't enough. I have more next week but I can't always count on being scheduled those kinds of hours. I will try to pick up more in the next two days because I am only scheduled 4 hours each day. Not worth my gas to go to work for 4 hours.

I'd prefer to work longer hours in a day, especially if I have to travel. It'll save more money and time too. If you can get a full time job, perhaps it'll be better for you, so you can save some money on bus fare and perhaps Uber too, unless you can find a second job which is very near to your current one.
Good luck to you and have a good day!

I’m sure I could find work by the restaurant I work at. There are more restaurants around and a shopping mall

it seems you are saving just a little from your salary, am i right? yes, i agree with you to look for a better job, or a second job but this should not take away your enthusiasm to work.

Sunday especially it is 1.5 hours by bus and train plus 15 minutes of walking each way.
The rest of the week, I only have a 10 minute bus ride and a 5 minutes walk each way but I have to leave early to not miss the bus as the drivers never come at their scheduled time. But it is hot now so waiting under the hot sun is no fun.
