Last april 10 we were in Kansai airport waiting for our flight departure for Manila when the 3pm flight was cancelled because the pilot was ill. We can't go back to apartment we rented since we have to travel again by train and will cost as another 2,400yen per pax in going back n forth and we are seven adults( my family) and three children. In short we have to be practical and decided to sleep at the airport. The airlines manager told us that all expenses made will be refunded after two months(unbelievable). It was a good thing that our food during the stay in the airport were free and all our luggages were checked in free of charge. Anyone here who were at the same situation while travelling abroad or other country?

Sadly, haven't tried traveling by airplane yet. Anyway, Don't they have a backup pilot.

That sounds awful. There should be plans in place for situations like that to cover your costs immediately. I’m lucky to say I have never had a plane cancelled only delayed for a couple of hours.
