working knowledge of English is required in many fields, professions, & occupations, education ministries throughout the world mandate the teaching of English to, at least, a basic level Because English is so widely spoken, it has often been referred to as a "global language", the lingua franca of the modern era. While English is not an official language in many countries, it is currently the language most often taught as a second language around the world. It is also, by international treaty, the official language for aircraft/airport and maritime communication, as well as being one of the official languages of both the European Union and the United Nations, and of most international athletic organizations, including the Olympic Committee. Books, magazines, and newspapers written in English are available in many countries around the world. English is also the most commonly used language in the sciences. In 1997, the Science Citation Index reported that 95% of its articles were written in English, even though only half of them came from authors in English-speaking countries. see more details here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language

English is the language for worldwide communication because of American dominance in the global economy. In order to make money, businesspeople from across the world needed to be able to communicate with the decision-makers in the United States.

I can't answer that mainly because that's the only language I know. I will say I have noticed in other countries they all speak so many languages, and in America MOST of us only speak English. I do with though.. that some of the illegal forieners (sp) here would learn the language. Where I live it's pretty much being force that we all learn Spanish. Why can't they learn English? They're in America. It only seems right.

the english travelled far and wide and while their stay in other countries they have influenced other cultures also and somehow we have all adapted it as our own. english, like any other language is a beautiful one. and its amazing that its spoken worldwide.. otherwise it would have been difficult to communicate with everybody if no one knwe a common language....
