False Persona...

I'm sure that many of us have exaggerated things or said things online that we wouldn't necessarily say in real life. I suppose the attention is nice and it might make us feel a sense of self-worth. A couple of years ago I started a Youtube channel. I thought I wouldn't get many views but I ended up being quite well known in a particular community. Since then I've been contacted by lots of high status people who want to meet me at events and even on a personal basis to be friends. My problem is that I feel that the persona I presented on Youtube is rather false. I presented a particular image so that people would want to view my videos. I feel like if I ever became involved with people offline I would have to keep up this false personality forever! Have you ever become someone else online? Perhaps you have faked gorgeous pictures on Insta or pretended to be doing something fun when really you are stuck at home watching T.V? Also, what would you do if you were me in this situation?

I know what you're saying. It starts innocently enough but then seems to develop a life of its own. I guess for myself - I wouldn't want to be keeping up a false image so I'd be trying to avoid having to actually meet these people.

@redurnet I'm sure it all seemed pretty simple and straightforward at the time.

That's true. I even changed my accent a bit for my videos and just having to keep that up would be very hard!

I feel this way on my Snapchat. I don't feel fake but in real life I suck at making friends because I am so shy but on social media it's so much easier to talk with people.

Nothing wrong with that, but just be yourself.

Fake gorgeous photo is something I would never ever do not here, not on instagram or anywhere else. Maybe I am naive but I always show the real me when being online that people told me I should be careful. I get turned off by people who are using gorgeous photos and sometimes pretending to be a girl just to get people's attention.

@redurnet FAlse pretenses. I don't post how happy my life is compared to others on instagram as you won't see me posting on facebook. I like posting the things I enjoy doing and the things I worked hard to gain. But I would never pretend to be happy when I'm not. In fact I post when I'm unhappy.

So many pictures on social media seem very posed nowadays. They all seem like adverts for a happy life.

I reflect who I am in real life. I am only on online sites. It is better that way as we attract people of similar yearnings. As you have found out, this approach avoids needless consequences - siva

That sounds like a very decent way to behave. I think it's important to be kind to people.

I wouldn't say false persona in that I haven't created an image of myself that isn't me. But I have tried, for the most part, to divide my personal and online lives where possible simply because of the vulnerability, I think, that comes with it. It's like musicians, actors and actresses and other public figures... many actors we know from the movies they are in, and we try to attribute their personalities to the characters they take on, but for the most part they also try to keep their private lives private and offline.

I have seen some actors who actively hide anything about their private lives on social media, going as far as to pretend they are single or don't have kids etc. I can understand that when you have so much attention. I have had a few strangers trying to get more information about me but when they ask I come up with excuses as you never really know someone unless you meet them in real life.

@redurnet Exactly! And even then, you really don't invite people into your lives...

I've never actually pretended to be someone I wasn't but I did tell a lie once online, not a big one, but one that got discovered by other members of a forum I belonged to. It was embarrassing and I learned from it. I think I was just trying to make myself look a little better than I was .. what a fool I think we all try to present ourselves in a good light so exaggerate a little sometimes. Probably best not to meet any of those people though

It's a difficult question haha I don't think I pretended to be someone else on social media but in love letter and SMS I did just for fun and teasing enemies when I was younger.

That's funny. I don't think I have ever done that via SMS.

No. I was always myself online. I wasn't a fake persona. I don't see the purpose. The truth is more important.

I think that for me I am often seen in real life as an outsider so it was perhaps easier to create a different personality online to fit in.

I have made accounts with fake names too - mainly to stop my family laughing at anything I do online.
