I have been told I am not allergic to my cat and was happy. I was thinking if I was told I am allergic to my cat I would keep her anyways and just have to take medication.
Are any of you allergic to your pets and you still keep them, or if you ever found out you were would to keep the pet?

It is very hard to lose our furry ones. I know I wanted my dog and cat before Sophie with me all my life. I know they die but I wanted more time with them.

Ah yes, I had that exact thing happen. I became allergic to cats and yet my pet is a cat. - I kept her - wouldn't dream of doing otherwise. Then I moved out from my parents - and they had to keep my cat until I got settled and got the proper paperwork filled out so I could have her.... and by that time..... she became my mom's cat :-)

@FayeHazel
Sorry about that Faye. What kind of paperwork do you have to do about a pet?

That is very unusal. I have never heard that. I remember when I was married we lived in an apartment and my ex was a mailman at the time and someone on his route's dog gave birth and asked if he wanted one and he called to ask me. I said sure. She was so cute and 2 months old She fit in his mail bag easily. She was lab-husky. I loved her so much. Well, when the landlord wanted to sell the place and we could not afford it he came and was so surprised to see the dog. He kept staring. He could not kick us out because we were moving.

@Hannihar - It's because I'm in an apartment. Normally no pets are allowed in here, though you can get around it by having a Doctor sign a note that states the animal is a "service" animal. Truthfully most Doctors will do this for any reason. IN my case it was easier yet because I have an anxiety disorder. Then on top of that the office manager here needed proof of shots for the cat, a form filled out (basic stuff saying that I won't allow the animal to run around, will dispose of the waste, will keep the animal out of the way of maintenance worker if they need to come in my unit, etc)... but processing all that takes a bit. Long enough for my cat and my mom to make friends. :-)

Never. It's not good to keep our life at risk just because of a pet.

The thing is my animals were never just pets. They were and are family.

I only have Princess the cat. I have lived with cats constantly for the last sixty years. I would be more likely to find I was allergic to "not" having a cat. Princess is old and I do not plan to get another cat should something happen to her, but for now she is here to stay.

I think I am slightly allergic to my cat...but not majorly. I would try giving him a bath..but I know how traumatic that would be. I might look for some dry pet shampoo. Actually, come to think of it..I used to have some. Anyway, my sis is allergic to her cats..she just tries to keep them out of the bedroom.

I don't have cats but I do know a professor who had more cats in her home a lot more than you can find in the shelter.

Yes, there are those that cannot say no to a stray so have more than enough in their homes.

I think I'd keep my pet and take medication to combat the allergies

If you were allergic to it then you should rehome it as you could make yourself ill or even die!

There is medication one can take for allergies. I am not allergic to my cat and glad of it. She has been through enough so glad I do not have to give her up like has been done to her before.

@Hannihar - I think it would depend on how bad my allergy was. If I could take a pill and be OK, then I would keep the pet. If I broke out in hives or had trouble breathing, and the medicine would not help, I think I would get rid of the pet.

You have a good point. It does depend on how badly you are allergic to the animal.
