Unbelievable is all I have to say! Winning one tournament a record 11 times and a major at that Raphael Nadal is the only player in the history of tennis to win 3 different tournaments 11 times after capturing the French Open today. The other two tournaments were at Monte Carlo and Barcelona.
Nadal defeated Dominic Thiem in straight sets by scores of 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2. He overcame cramping in his hand and finger during the match to close out Thiem and win his 17th major overall, trailing only Roger Federer's 20 majors.
Thiem had beaten Nadal on clay at Rome and Madrid this year so this
match was supposed to be a real test for him. But the "King of Clay" dominated the rallies and frustrated Thiem with a steady diet of shots to his backhand and opportunistic drop shots. As the Austrian found out, on the red clay of Roland Garros defeating Nadal is a tough obstacle to overcome.
In other tennis action on the Women's side Simona Halep finally captured her first Gland Slam title with a 3-set victory over her American rival Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Halep finally overcame her French Open demons having lost here previously in two other appearances. Simona had ascended to the #1 position in the World ranking just before this tournament.
With this victory she has cemented her position at the top of Women's tennis.
Did you watch any of the French Open tennis action? Who were you rooting for to win the tournament? For me, I was in Rafa's corner all the way!

@ridingbet You are right on both counts Ingrid Nadal's ground strokes were terrific. He actually does everything right-handed but tennis. That helped make his backhand so good!

Rafa is my favorite now.
I have been following Tennis from 1963 when Chuck McKinley won Wimbledon.
Federer is a class act but I go for Nadal.
I do not know why we take sides but I think few connect more with our temperament and outlook.
In Tennis, mine include Rosewall, Wilander, Edberg, Ferrero - siva

@dgobucks226 The advent of Connors, McEnroe, and Gilbert changed the game from one where players were sportive. These three were aggressive and even threatening. I was surprised when even Chang put pressure on the line judges by going near and staring at them during close calls. Gilbert once purposely bumped into David Wheaton at the crossover and Connors charged at McEnroe at the net!
Federer and Nadal have proved one can be great without the added aggression - siva

@Shiva49 Yes, so true. Unfortunately some players temperaments translate to the court. The added pressure of competing and winning brings out the ugliness of these players you've mentioned. One player today who is a terrible sport is the Aussie, Nick Kyrgios.

Yes, I agree. The way the athlete plays the game, personality, success, sportsmanship and attitude draws one to that particular player. I hold Wilander, Borg, Rosewall, Edberg and Sampras in very high regard. I also rooted for Connors. I don't know exactly why I favored a person with his kind of temperament, but in his defense, he always gave 100 % effort win or lose and that I had to respect. As he aged his commitment to his craft also earned my praise for him as a competitor.
