My last post wasn't a pademelon but a Bennett's wallaby (sad, embarrassed face)

My last post was about the Tasmanian pademelon, a small marsupial that belongs to the kangaroo family. However I’ve found more photos on the web and what we saw were Bennett’s wallabies so I’m sorry for the mistake. I was a bit quick to put a label on this cute animal. Technically Bennett’s wallabies are smaller than kangaroos but larger than pademelons. They are also known as red-necked wallabies due to the russet-coloured fur across the neck. Their distinguishing features are the black nose and paws and a white stripe on the upper lip. In one national park there is a small population of white ones. Wouldn’t that be something to see? Photo of wallabies at Cataract Gorge, Launceston.

Ha, like we would know the difference! Of course, I misspelled wallaby and wrote hoping instead of hopping!

I wanted to correct it before someone turned up and said 'actually, it's not blah blah blah'. Then I would have been hoping - oops, hopping - mad!

They are adorable. You know actually just the name pandemelon makes me think of melons, not anything kangaroo-like Thanks for the information.

We have a weed here called a paddy melon and it seems really strange to have these little animals called the same thing. We have paddy melons come up every year in our paddocks and I go down and pull them out by hand. The first year there were a huge number but now I can pull out any new plants in a very short time.

Don't forget to come to the West and don't forget to let me know so perhaps we can meet and maybe even have you stay so we show you around.

@JudyEv OH bless you how very kind! They have started it about two weeks ago. Direct to Heathrow I think it took about 17 hours so that is around 3-4 hours saved. Plus it is just slightly cheaper (£4) than Stopping over in Singapore. Surprised Perth is 5 hours from Singapore! Quite a distance isn't it. Enjoy Tasmania. I understand it is very beautiful there. I have relatives/friends in Launceston

I forgot to say they're starting a non-stop flight relatively soon - maybe July this year?

They're adorable and to this 'foreigner' they look quite exotic-- and certainly there is nothing like them around here.

@JudyEv Are Australians warned to stay clear of those animals- I know kangaroos can be dangerous! I also know they are one of the ingredients of a good stodge--haha!

It seems Australia was really cut off from th rest of the world when all these animals were evolving. New Guinea has some that are closely related to ours including a tree kangaroo that climbs trees. It's also found in Queensland.

THe only ones I don't find too attractive are the big red roos. They have Roman (convex) noses which I don't like much.

Some of them really are close in appearance and it can be difficult to identify the different ones. That's my story anyway!

It's a funny word isn't it? We also have paddy melons which are a field melon and a pest. But they are pronounced the same
