I like to watch birds in my yard so I feed them to encourage them to come and stay. With this hot weather, I have been trying to find a way to give them some water to drink nearby so they will stick around a little longer. I put a large pan on the ground and put some rocks in it with water, but they weren't much interested. (It might have got hot too fast.) So I went looking for ideas and came across this one. It's similar to chicken waterers, but I couldn't figure out how to make one. I am going to try! Has anyone made one like that? Do you watch the birds in your yard?

I set out bowls of water all over the yard, under shade trees mostly.

thats the main thing, shade. water gets too hot really quick out in the open.

Do they come to them? Maybe I am just impatient. It's only been a few days.

I saw beautiful bird feeders near the IguazĂș falls. There was a place where they had hummingbirds and it was the water and sugar feeders that made them come.

I have hummingbirds now and then, but I jjust wanted to put out water for everyone. I wonder if a sugar water feeder would work with plain water in it.

@peavey The lady with the hummingbirds said that she used plain water. But that she had to change it every day.

@marguicha That's good to know! If I can't get this one done (haven't worked on it yet), that's an idea I might try, thanks!

Can you put your large pan on top of something so it's a bit higher? Some birds feel unsafe if they have to go to ground level to eat or drink. And if you can put it in the shade they might be more interested.

I don't think I can put it up on something, but it's in the shade. I wondered if it was too hidden for them, they might be afraid of predators since its near the base of a tree.

place them under some shade. try different heights, ground, in a tree. also put a wall of something on the opposite side from where youd be. that way they will more likely be sideways to you and easier to photograph if you want to .

All good ideas. I will have to experiment and see if I can make it work. I am not a photographer, I just want to watch them.

I know... I love to watch them. They sometimes come into the pudddles after a rain where I can watch them without scaring them. I could never photograph them, I'm not fast enough!
