I must be in the wrong business

I see from the ad to the side that I can buy a six inch red velvet cake, for $34.99. Pretty sure shipping and handling go on top of that. Probably the most expensive part of that is the red food coloring. The original recipe for red velvet cake was first published by Mrs. McKesson. Yep, McKesson, who sells spices and food coloring. Helped her hubby grow his business. Required two bottles of red coloring for a cake. I really am not impressed with "red velvet" anything. It is just a red chocolate cake. I AM impressed by the price people can charge for stuff.

Cakes sell for crazy amounts these days. Most people don’t know how to do anything more than use a box mix and a can of frosting so they have to pay the big bucks for anything else.

My daughter-in-law makes custom cakes. I can start with a box and turn it into something really good. Homemade frosting is much more delicious.

Hi Heather. I am not a fan of red velvet cakes or cupcakes. And the price, I think they have included all the costs in those cakes (even those that are not really included in making the cakes).

Even going out and buying the pans I could make this for less than ten dollars.

@GardenGerty Exactly. But why not make one instead, Heather?

I always said I have to move to US, because things are pretty cheap compared to here. Here you get a normal cake for around 40 euro-the cheapest. Anyway. I don't like food dyes and all kinds of *fireworks* on my cake. A simple fruit cake tastes so much better and looks natural. Otherwise I feel like I am eating plastic.

Well the cake in the image was not cheap. I could make one like it for under $5, especially the small size of it. Now I have to go see how to exchange dollars and euros.

I am probably just not a big cake fan anyway. Love the traditional cream cheese frosting on it though.

Wow, that is highway robbery. Even if it were elaborately decorated it wouldn't be worth the money.

It was not even "spectacular", just a cake. Small one at that.

I'd pay more for the icing than the cake.

I don't like dyes being out in our foods so I am not thrilled with red velvet cake either. I hate chocolate cake anyway and this just always looks yummier then it is. I would not want to buy a cake online ever. I can't imagine how they would keep it from getting tipped over of having the frosting get messed up let alone keep it chilled and fresh.

They would probably pack it in a foam cooler with dry ice. I have seen a red velvet that got it's color from beets. It was okay.

@GardenGerty my daughter used to be allergic to red dye so when I made her cakes I used beet juice.

Never tasted this kind of cake and certainly would not pay this price for just a 6 in piece of it.
