I'm Going to Ireland This Fall

I am so excited. I am going to Dublin with my girlfriend and her significant other. My hubs has decided that he is not up for this much walking with the pain that he has in his back. I am sad but I know that he is right, it would probably be too much for him and since it is my friends first time there, we wouldn't want to negatively affect their getaway. We decided to go because we were able to get tickets on Aer Lingus for only $458 RT. It has been 20 years since I have seen a fare like that. It wasn't even the cheapest fare but we opted to pay a little more to be able to pick our seats and check a bag for free. I also spent $32 for insurance that covers emergency medical and dental care. I have contacted my favorite hotel and booked our rooms for us, including their delightful breakfast. Now it is just a matter of planning the rest. I need to renew my passport since when we are traveling in November I will not have 6 months remaining on it. I also need to order some Euros so we have cab fare when we arrive. We will land at 5 a.m. in the morning so we have reserved our rooms for the day before so that we can go right to bed after breakfast when we arrive. I usually like to sleep until about 1 or 2 and then hit the road running!! I am going to contact my orthopedic doctor to get shots in my knees, probably in August or September so that they have time to heal and kick in. It was 3 years ago in September when I last visited. I love Dublin and we are also planning to hire a driver for at least one day for a trip out of the city. I am so excited I can hardly stand it!!

I certainly will try, I have not decided yet if I will bring my laptop. Since I am going to have to manage all my luggage myself, it is something I need to consider. I might opt for my tablet and I am not as good with that.

This is my fifth visit so I am at least a little familiar with the city but I am looking forward to going to the Emigration museum.

Ireland is a great country to visit but like all of Europe, it is changing and is much more diverse than it was 22 years ago when I visited the first time.

This is exciting. Your husband took a good decision, so many hours in a plane would not be good for his back.

@LadyDuck Oh I am sorry about that, but you could always cruise, oh yah your husband doesn't like cruises does he? Well, Europe is a wonderful place to live and visit.

Yes the Parkinson's is the cause of his back pain and there is not much we can do about it.

@BelleStarr My husband is pretty healthy, but he has an aortic aneurysm near the heart. Now a long flight is not recommended. It's the end of our travels to the United States.

I have only been to Scotland once but my other friend and I have talked about doing a highland tour, her family originally came from Fort William. I may have one Scotish ancestor and he is supposedly from Leith which is the port for Edinburgh.

With flight prices so low, I just couldn't resist. The hotel will run over $1,000 but still that is all pretty reasonable considering U-2 is in Dublin that week. My friend bought two tickets for her and her significant other to go to the concert, I passed when I heard the price was $450 per ticket. lol

Ooh lucky you I bet you will have a whale of a time. If it is your friends first time I would recommend those hop on hop off bus tours. They take you to most of the important sites around the cities and help you get your bearings. I will PM you with some information about tours! I bet you are beyond excited. That was a pretty good price for your ticket.

I went to Ireland 2.5 years ago and I paid more than $800 for my ticket from Boston plus it cost us $150 for the transport there. I love the hope on hop off tour, Thanks for the tour offers, I am looking for some great ideas to share with them.

@DianneN lol I have been to England and London over 20 times. I have been to Paris twice but surprisingly I didn't fall in love with it. This same friend wants me to do Paris with her and we almost did and then the Parish bombings started and I didn't feel safe going there.

I had a friend who traveled to Ireland on vacation. Her family is Irish and she had a wonderful time! She and her family especially enjoyed chatting with the local town folk at the Pub. Also terrific scenery there and she saw an Irish castle. Do you have any Irish ancestry?
