Punishment for crime needs to be understood

The other day there was some discussion about tattooing the rapist. I have long held that opinion, especially for pedophiles, as it would save little children from being seen in their company.
But there was a fellow myLotter who felt there is scope for reform, and tattooing is a permanent labeling.
Today, in another post they have mentioned public beheading - which is barbaric, as is public lynching.
I feel there are some crimes that require people to realize how much they have wronged another person and another person's family.
Imprisoning is not sufficient. Serving term is not. It is realization...the big word REALIZATION that helps the person to reform, and accepts the sentence that goes along with it.
It is not only the person who commits the crime, but even those who love such a person who should be heard and counseled so that anger and indignation about such issues dies and such crimes are not subtly or surreptitiously propagated as a way to express defiance.
Our media heard the mother of the rapist and killers on December 12 gang rape. The pain of the mother who lost her child needs to be witnessed for progress towards better society I feel.
Here is a movie that touched me in respect of crime and punishment.
Dor Shankar Singh and his wife, Meera, live in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India along with widowed paternal grandmother, Laxmibai, his mom, Gowri, and dad, Randhir....

Hi Vanny. I think any punishment will not give justice to the pain and trauma that happened with the victim. Public shaming is one for me.

I think there needs to be some remorse otherwise, the person is only trying to live through the sentence, and eventually get out to get even and once out, they are not going to get even with the person who hurt them, but entire bunch that has similar nature or characteristics. In all probability, we change a person into serial killer or serial rapist.

@vandana7 Painful for the victims, yet maybe there are other ways to make others suffer. IT is up to us thought if we want to be serial killers or rapists.

@mlgen1037 If the present format creates repeat offenders, then we need to have a serious rethink...as to why such a thing is happening, and how we need to rectify the situation.

As usual you are a true humanist, giving hope to offenders to get your pardon when they will reach the "realization" point. When people are released earlier than they should from jail, it is because a commission of specialists thinks that they have realized what they did and will not relapse. But we know that it is not always true...

Aw top..yes, I do not believe those sentences like if condition this, else this, work. In some cases, perhaps. In many cases, no. The resolve to return and get even and hurt others in similar situation increases. Realization is the key and keeping people in condition that angers them will not. If you have the patience and time to watch that movie, though you might not understand the movie, here is one with English subtitles.
Human mind is also forgiving...how we approach it is what matters...
