What really causes cancer?
Many people I know of have contracted cancer over the past few years and I can't figure out what causes it. Some say it's the food you eat, but I can't understand how food causes it.
Some even say it is hereditary. Can we really prevent yourself from cancer?

@owlwings ory is all about the cancer what you have described....I am a Vet I can very well understand what you say. But today there are many medicine Mafias which are making money out of people just by black mailing them in the name of this disease which is still in controversy! Thanks!

Cancer is basically the result of DNA being damaged in a particular way so that cancerous cells start to multiply uncontrollably . This can happen in a number of ways and it's true that the likelihood (but not the inevitability) of contracting certain types of cancer can be inherited.
In fact, DNA gets damaged all the time and the body has ways of repairing it but sometimes these fail or become weakened, often due to age (which is why many people who develop cancer do so when they are older).
Certain chemicals can be instrumental in causing cancer (these are known as carcinogens) and certain other chemicals, in particular anti-oxidants, can help in fighting the damage to the DNA. There is no known way of preventing cancer. All you can do is reduce the risk of developing cancer by eating good natural foods and by avoiding, as far as possible, known carcinogens. However, most cancers can be treated successfully provided that they are detected early enough.
Advances in medicine are prolonging the human life span and it is a fact that the longer a person lives, the more likely it is that they will contract some form of cancer and, if human life expectancy were long enough, everyone would eventually die of cancer.

@asswclown I'm not a biologist or a medical person but I'm a cancer survivor. Naturally, I have read and absorbed all I can about the disease, though I can't pretend to understand much of the very technical detail.

For an automobile to run well and last, it needs the right fuel and oils. If we don't give it what it needs and was designed to use then it will break down and eventually cease functioning.
The human body was designed to function on certain foods and liquids, we give the body all kinds of monstrosities. How can it function and continue?
Example: The body needs air. We smoke! Do you see a problem?

If scientists knew exactly what causes cancer then there would probably be a cure or vaccine by now

@asswclown Yes, animals can also suffer from cancer. Most, though, don't live long enough to develop it.
