Summertime NOT The Longest Day

Today, June 21st, is the summer solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere, Summer starts today.
It's not the "longest day" as some believe. All the days of the year last 24 hours. This is the day with the longest daylight.
Those are the cities, around the world, that today, have the longest daylight :
- Baltic States (North of Europe) Rovaniemi 24 hours
(they have no night today, the famous midnight sun!)
- Europe Edinburgh (UK) 17 hours 36 minutes
- Africa: Cairo (Ehypt) 14 hours 04 minutes
- United States Fairbanks (Alaska) 21 hours 49 minutes
- Asia and Oceania Provideniya (Russia) 21 hours 23 minutes
As you can see, the northern you go, the longer the day lasts.
In the southern hemisphere, they have the longest night time.
Are you going to celebrate the beginning of summer?
Time to spend more time outdoors.

@ridingbet It is the LANDS of midnight sun, because it's more than one country. The Lands of midnight sun are : Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Russia, Finland, Alaska, Greenland, Northern Norway.

Longest day light is the right expression. There are so many such blunders have gone down through centuries. When India got Independence This is what Nehru said in his speech
"At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom" Time zones say otherwise

@bunnybon7 For the moment we are lucky, it's not too hot. I do not care if people complain that they cannot use their pools, I hate hot temperature.

Boy, you went all technical. Its cool. I only speak in slang, so how we became friends, not sure, but sure is fun. Nice when everyone is themselves and not trying to be someone they are not and have the freedom to feel comfortable to be themselves. It makes life so much better and I always found it interesting this time of year. A lot of sun or darkness and it really does effect people's mood, behavior because sun is good like that. We are all made out of star dust and can get really interesting as to why you think the sun being up so long makes you more cheery or gives you more energy. Its neat to think about because we connected that blinding piece of heat.

@LadyDuck OK, will leave it at that then, get that part but thought most knew that. Big difference is when sun is here and when its not. Think you can admit that.

You know, we say wrong things during all our life and this become normal to say "the longest day". This is ridiculous and not true. There are no days in one year that are longer or shorter. There are days with more hours of daylight, this is the one that has more.

@crossbones27 Of course it makes a difference, but we cannot say "longest day". I remember when my niece was young and asked me "should we do something with our watches? How many hours does it last?". This proves that kids are sometimes more intelligent than adults.

It's too hot and humid outside to enjoy the longest day of sunlight (you've been to Florida, you know what I mean)! So, instead, I spent the day inside in the nice cold air conditioning! haha

@moffittjc This is what I loved of your state. With the daylight saving time, it stays daylight until past 10 pm now. I go to sleep and it's not even dark.

@LadyDuck In the summertime it will stay daylight until around 9 PM. But you are correct, there is not much difference in our amount of daylight from one season to the next.

Hi Anna. Here it is rainy season but we still experience hot days. Summers here give us scorching heat and we feel like the day is so long that the heat is never ending.

It is strange and wonderful to still have some daylight past 9 PM. We have to enjoy it as it will not last long.

The longest day I suffer is when people who bore me or annoy me or whose company I dislike are around me...what has sunlight gotta do with it, I don't really know. Kidding.
Aw...no night? Blink...no ghosts no vampires...no place for vanny.
I think east or west, India is the best.

I always knew that this day had the most hours of daylight in it, but sometimes people refer to it as the longest day. Its just like the first day of winter is the shortest day of the year, not in hours, but in sunlight time during that day.
Happy first day of summer!!

oh, now i get it. June 21st should be referred to as "the longest daylight" and not longest day.
time to disprove the misconception taught to me when i was in my school years.

@LadyDuck so, if i live near a shore, i can easily record the time the sun rises and sets, and that will be counted as the longest daylight. i will try to record it tomorrow.probably i have to be up at 4:30AM because the sun starts to peep before 5AM.

@LadyDuck thank you. i think one mobile phone that my brother gave me has the weather app, and it shows the sunrise and sunset of a particular country.
