Japanese People - Act of kindness incident

Tokyo, Japan
June 28, 2018 11:53pm CST
Hello This is Anuj from Tokyo, Japan. Been living here in Japan for almost 5 years and habe been experiencing the lifestyle of Japan. I do love Japanese food like sushi, "takoyaki" and tempuras. Morever I like the taste chilled draft beer. Recently I realized that are the Japanese people most polite people in the world? Whole world knows their service and hospitality is 1005 and 5 star no doubt on that. But its their industry and they have the appeal to make it good and best. But local people around, they are too polite and respectful. They will just bow down to you even though the mistake is yours. Mistake can be from tiny to not a trouble making one. I am excluding other problems like stealing, beating and all. For instance last month, My bicycle glass was broken in front of my apartment. I still dont know who did it and how. But I am assuming it was an accident, and person who broke the bicycle`s glass had no such intention. As I was examining the glass, I found a paper attached to 2000 Yen equivalent to 20 usd dollar. On the paper it was written " Sorry I broke your glass by mistake, please accept this as my sincere apology.." It was written in Japanese. I was surprised . Surprised to see the humbless, honesty of Japanese people. I dont think I would have done such kind of act of humbleness. I would simply walk faster knowing that I broke someone else glass. They are polite inside train,on the street, everywhere. I know Tokyo is the safest city in whole world, and reason is simple, THE PEOPLE.

It is part of the Japanese culture. As a homogeneous society, the emphasis is on the collective group rather than the person as a singular identity. The interests and well-being of a group will always take precedent to that of the individual's. So a member of a family will defer to the family, a family will give way to the wishes of the community, and a community to the national interest of their country. What we think is politeness is their way of maintaining order and harmony among members of the social group.
