Did you ever have a car that didn't have power steering?

This heat wave reminds me of a car that I had a number of years ago. It was a Toyota Tercel, and it was a great little car except for the fact that it had no power steering. Plus it had a dark interior which absorbed the sun's rays..Bad design on that car. It was miserable trying to drive that thing in the heat. I put on steering wheel covers, used sunshades and whatever I could do to try to make it cooler in there. I had to sell it just because I couldn't stand it any longer. Have you had a car that you had to put the muscle in it to steer?

My first car was also a Toyota - Hilux. I was its thir owner but it lasted 7 years with me and yes, it did not have power starting. My second car, an Isuzu Hilander SLX already had power steering and was 19 years with me. My current car, an Isuzu MU-X also has power steering.

I don't think they sold the Hilux here. The Tercel was common here in the 90's. You don't see them on the road anymore really..at least I haven't.

@snowy22315 I guess they sold the Hilux in the Asian market. The new version now of the Hilux is robust and has power steering and many other modern features.

@sunrisefan OK, i wonder why they sell certain cars in certain markets. I guess differences in the manufacturing process.

I can remember when power steering was a luxury. My first car was a 49 Plymouth and it didn't have power steering. Neither did my dad's, which was several years newer. I don't remember them being hard to steer, but maybe I was stronger then

@snowy22315 Yeah, that would make it a little difficult.

@peavey You know how it is when you are running across hot sand or pavement in your barefeet? That is how it was handling the wheel.

It wasn't so much that the car was hard to steer but having to grip a wheel that was probably 150 degrees was!

I don't think I did, or I would remember the struggle.

When I was a kid, I think cars did not have power steering, or if it was availabble, it wasn't in any card we owned.

I do not drive, but I suspect that the first cars that my husband drove had no power steering. I am not sure it existed in the late 60's.

I think the transmission and steering are two different elements.
