If you are a male and an engineer, you better not enter Bihar state of India unless you wish to be kidnapped

...and fall victim to "Pakaruah Vivah" which is a fallout practice of dowry system. As the girls' families become unable to provide sufficient dowries, they adapted and started the practice of Pakaruah Vivah (Forced Wedding). There are legit groom kidnapping gangs operating that kidnap the eligible bachelors and forcibly wed them to an unmarried girl
And since marriage is regarded as sacred institution in India, most of these marriages are not annulled. In case, the groom wishes to fight it, the law works against him.
Adult unmarried males with qualifications such as medical, engineering, or an IAS and government servicemen are the main targets for such kidnappings.
Did I forget to mention the wedding is performed at gun point to secure the "consent" of the groom? um...sorry? Must have skipped my mind...

@AKRao24 and all that time his family are sick with worry about his disappearance? when they find out there will be a lot of resentment on the groom and his family's part against the bride and her family. not a good start. more like a prison sentence.

@hereandthere The bride's family with the bride take the groom back with "traditional" rituals. Naturally the resentment will be there but the question is are they allowed to show it though? Coz from what I gather, bride's families pressure the groom and his family to accept the bride with respect and dignity. Grooms are not given a choice.

That's scary. Many men will leave India if that is happening.

@neelia_lyn We have plenty to India to roam about. No need to leave the country just because of a single state

@Daljinder I have read here that you have many problems. I´m sure that you will overcome them because you are a great country. But what you just wrote, what I have heard about the amount of rapes there, the treatment of women in some cases are shocking to me. Still, there are many things that are very interesting for a tourist. But I will better watch it in a film or a video.

@marguicha True! There definitely are many interesting places here. India has one of most phenomenal architectural wonders. Centuries if not millennia old historical places all throughout the country. All types of weather and landscape all at one place.

I suggest you to go through this 'tradition' once. It's quite a fun to be captured in a jute sack, transported, and then being married off with only your head looking out of that sack! So much fun!!!!

@LadyDuck Dowry system is criminal offense according to The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and this legislation came into force from July 1, 1961. The implementation and lack of knowledge of rights by the people are the problem.

Thank you DJ! But let me tell you a secret: for any good man, a marriage is always a "forced" one! The sooner he realizes it, the better....

That is awful, why are they still living in the olden ages. How do they ever expect to move and update the country if they don't upgrade and rewrite some of the laws that make life so unfavorable for so many. How can one truly be happy in love and marriage when its forced upon them, thats not love. I feel sorry for them

@VivaLaDani13 We have many weird and some sick traditions. Like in Rajasthan, the "Holi" festival which is celebrated with colours. They have this tradition "Lath mar Holi" where wives beat up their husbands with bamboo sticks.

@anamika161088 They are saving 50 lakhs of dowry by this kind of marriage. This way, they only have to pay 2-5 lakhs to the goons and no dowries.

@slapllotik These are goons who have taken up the "honorary" job of getting the daughters married. They just missed the key factor called "consent" and "happily married".
