Never Had A Pit In My Life

I have always been a dog lover, and a cat lover, as well. I got it from my mom. My mom was the one who got me my first dog, I was four years old then. Since then, I have been an animal lover.
I've had 10 dogs and seven cats all at the same time. Nope, not ridiculous. Just an animal lover in me. I do not see myself without a pet, that's for sure. Haha...
A couple months ago, my boyfriend was looking at this pup on Facebook. He was telling me we need to rescue the pup. I was hesitant. Ok, the dog was a pit bull and I was scared of them. You know, with these news about pit attacking its owner and/or people.
To make a long story short, my boyfriend won. We got the pup. OMG! He was the sweetest dog I've ever had!!! He is always following me. Sleeps with us. Yes, I let my pit sleep in bed with us. He is a ham and I'm in love.
I am no longer scared of pits. It's how we treat the animals.
How about you? What was your first experience with your pets?

My daughter had a pit that she rescued when she was one, her name was Angel and she fit the name. She was the best dog I have ever seen, my grand daughter grew up with her and she would sit on Angel and read her stories, it was so cute. We were sad when Angel had to be put to sleep at the age of 10. Glad you got a good one too,

I'm sorry to hear about Angel. It's sad to let them go but we will do the best for them.
I named our pit DJ. My bf is a dj and that's where I got his name. If he wants to play, he will grab his toy and put his humongous head on our laps with his toy in his mouth. No dull moments, haha... he is a year and a half.

I've had dogs & cats too @Deajae72 and that does include a Pit. She was very loving and a great guard dog at the same time. Now remember Pits are prone to cancer, so be very diligent in examining the dogs body regularly for any lumps. Most will show up at the neck or groin area.

@nanette64 Hi. Nanette. His name is DJ. I named him after my boyfriend who is a dj. His name suits him. I call him DJ Barks.

It is not the dog itself but the owner that raises the dog. See, your dog is very sweet. I remember when I first came to Israel to live someone had a doberman. She was the sweetest kindest dog I ever met except for when i had my dog. We cannot believe what people say about a certain kind of animal. It is how the animal is raised and you and this other person are living proof that they are good dogs too.

Hi, Tee! Glad to see another Pitty owner here!
I had a similar situation: My husband was adamant about getting a dog. He'd been looking on Craiglist for months, always asking me to look at dogs, asking me if one or the other looked nice. I never agreed with him because I didn't want a pit. I had been raised to believe they were bloodthirsty fighting dogs, and that they regularly mauled people. Sure, every now and then you'd here that one bit a kid, or attacked another dog. So I kept saying no. Finally, he showed me one that I noticed looked very sad. I couldn't pin it down - she just looked sad, even in pictures with the family. So I agreed to meet her. After three weeks of my husband trying to get the dog to meet me, the family brought her over, and I was scared but in control, with a handful of deli turkey in my hand, 5 minutes later, she was sitting on the couch next to me with her head in my lap. I gave in, and accepted her.
But the big part of this story is that only two weeks later, my husband passed away suddenly, and left me all alone. But that was the thing - even though I was far from family, and on my own, my loving girl watched over both me and the house, guarding against strangers with her growls and barking, keeping me safe at night, and treating my cats with respect and love. She thinks they are her puppies!
To all those who doubt pits (and mine is a pit-bulldog-doberman mix, and most pits are mixes), you should try one before putting them down. Just remember, pits are better by themselves, as they need lots of love, and have lots of love to give right back.
