An alien village? No, just rock cairns

While at Cataract Gorge in Launceston, Tasmania, we saw these little cairns that people had built with small stones on the banks of the lake there. It looks rather like a strange alien village. The park was designed for the pleasure and pastime of the early settlers but there were strict rules as to the activities that could be enjoyed there. There was to be no boisterousness, no bad language, no discharging firearms or using catapults and no playing games. Use of the play equipment – swings, maypoles and see-saws – was forbidden on Sundays. Just to make sure the people behaved with decorum, the swings were chained to stop people from using them. That wouldn’t go down well nowadays, would it?

People behaved with decorum! This is what this world needs certainly. I think I'd love that place a lot.

Those rules aren't in force now. They were different times back then weren't they?

@JudyEv We have found several. Finally my husband told me that we were wasting our time going inside a park to see a nice lake but being unable to do anything.

Are there still parks that are so limiting? Australia isn't so bad now although safety is a constant issue.

The little rock piles make it look strange. It wasn't anywhere near this dark but I thought it looked good being dark.

And they did what for pleasure? Do I even want to guess?

They took genteel walks in their best finery and sipped cups of tea.

No, today people would protest and loudly. Are you sure there aren't some dwarfs living among the stones

I think there could well be dwarfs there and perhaps some gnomes and ogres as well.

I would think that nowadays they would probably want to encourage people to use the swings and play equipment. You know, like have an old fashioned picnic or barbecue after church on Sunday! That would probably help keep people out of trouble.

Looks creepy. Glad they are making strict rules to preserve the place.

It is obviously a very popular park now as there were a lot of people there.
