My dear friend Miriam is very particular about how she is "put to bed" for nap time. Sometimes Anna has to come and tuck her in, and then I have to come, adjust the covers, and put a kiss on her cheek. Other times, Anna has to tuck her in and I have to "lay with her" for five minutes.
Recently, with Anna in Israel, Miriam has asked me to "rub her back" for a few minutes. She always falls asleep. But today, the threw me a curve. She asked me to tuck her in, but then play guitar for her, so she could fall asleep. I sometimes but not always play guitar (for all of the kids) at nap time.
I fulfilled my promise, and she fell asleep, as she usually does, after about two minutes of guitar. This photo is from last week, when a back rub produced the desired results. Sometimes I worry about one of my specialties in life being making children feel safe and getting them to sleep. I'm an aging "tough guy" and star athlete. Shouldn't I be coaching or bar tending or something?
Here's a song I relate to. I've never killed anybody, nor even been particularly mean to anybody, in at least 40 years. But I still relate to this song as sung by Emmylou Harris and Waylon Jennings. Hope you give it a listen.

Never heard this before. She is a lovely girl. I can understand that guitar music can make you sleep. My friend's son came home late yesterday and I was just getting into bed upstairs around 2 AM when heard he had put on guitar music downstairs. I could hear the music as I lay there and before even the last chord had struck I was fast asleep.

Emmylou Harris does not like me so she is not letting me watch...she may be hurt that I said you sang Pancho & Lefty better than her. That said, I often feel guilty for making kiddos feel safe with me. World is not a safe place, they need to suspect every outsider...

Heh. I also know, from lecturing about sleep and dreams, when it's safe to photograph a sleeping child. You just have to wait as they pass through their first REM (dream sleep) episode, and catch them in deep sleep. They won't wake up.

I remember my father patting my bum to put me to sleep .Sometimes the eldest among my siblings did that to me.
