When alone in home, what would you do if a stranger knocks?

Whenever I am alone, I prefer not to open the door to stranger. At least that's what I have been doing and that's what my parents taught me. And I instruct the same for my mother. If the person goes on knocking, I will behave as if no one is at home. Do you react in the same way?

After all, when we're safe, we can think about other important things.

This is a good and bad habit to have. There are those who knock on the door to make sure no one is at home. If they think no one is at home they might try to break in.
There was once a few months ago that I had a fright.
I was the only one at home and we knew that a man to check our meter would be coming around. I was going down the hall (that passes the front door) and I heard a knock. Now I don't answer the door when I am home alone. They kept on knocking persistently. I feel as if they must have seen me pass by the door as there is a bit of a hole in one of the blinds. I was so frightened because they kept on knocking. I stood around the corner where they could not see me. Eventually they stopped but then went around the house. This is where the meter was but I thought maybe they were going to try to get in the door that is there.
I heard them messing with the meter and soon realized that they were checking it. I went outside and called for them. They came around the side and instructed me to turn off the breakers to the house.
He could have been less persistent about his knocking.

@deba12 Yes. I am lucky it was just that. I was afraid to go back down the hall but I thought that I probably should. I had my phone down the hall but I would have had to go past the door again.
He should be lucky I didn't call the cops on him.

Yes I agree with you. Many times it's not good to keep the door shut, as it was in your case.

It is scary when strange people knock on the door. People have knocked on my door in the middle of the night when I am alone. I refuse to answer. I look out the window to see if there is a vehicle in front of my place, usually, there is not. One night, I was working at my desk downstairs and someone tried to get in. I saw them twist the doorknob three times and then they left. So scary.

No, I will open the door when someone knocks but if I have a screen door I will lock it, now on our house we have a big glass partition in the door that I can open and ask who it is without opening the door itself.
