. The pineapple had become the symbol of royal privilege. ... It was this that made the crowned fruit the high symbol of social events and became the meaning of welcome, friendship, and hospitality.

I love pineapple so much. I had not learned that story, I am glad I did now. I did not know even that it is a symbol of social events and a sign of welcome, friendship and hospitality.

I heard that in the "Colonies" sea captains would bring pineapple home from their journeys. If they set one out on their front porch that meant that friends would be welcome to visit.

Oh my, not a pineapple fan. Although, I do like the smell.
This reminds me of how sugar was such an expensive commodity back in the day {like, Tudor times} that the more rotten and black your teeth were was a sign of wealth and status.

Wow, I didn't know that about the pineapple. I love it too and it is so healthy and good for you to eat. When I dehydrate my fruit I soak it in pineapple first because it keeps it from turning brown.

A fun discussion. thank you! I buy a portion of fresh pineapple almost everyday. The vendor has already "skinned" it and it is usually very sweet! In the States. when I would buy one at the market I would pull on one of the leaves and if it came out with a pop, I knew it was ripe. I used to think they grew on trees but one time I passed by a pineapple farm here and was surprised to find them growing on what looked like a bush!
