What is a salad?

Hubby's work place had a salad contest today. Their Wellness Committee promoted this idea. I wasn't there so I only got a second hand report on what was what. BLT salad: bacon, lettuce and tomato salad, I presume? The other salad that got my brain and mouth going was the Cookie Salad. Yes. Yum. But is a broken up cookies in pudding concoction really a salad? Can I then grab a bowl of ice cream, stick a piece of broccoli in its middle and declare that to be my salad for the day? I'm glad hubby's co-workers had fun. I remember my Mom grating carrots into lime Jello and calling that salad. My hubby hated it. I kind of liked the mix of carrots and raisins all swollen in sweet fake Jello. But that was then and well, this is now.

In India when we say Salad that means small pieces of some fresh vegetables without adding any type of fats to it! Some people squeeze half a lemon on these pieces! Otherwise nothing is added to it!

@sallypup , As per the Wikipedia there are many variations, so there is no harm if you use tofu as a substitute for fatty salad!

@AKRao24 I like your idea. I have been thinking about using tofu as a substitute for fatty salad dressings.

That's nice. My idea of a salad is a fusion of vegetables with breadcrumbs, chicken strips, a thousand island dressing as well as boiled eggs mixed.
Make and share this Thousand Island Dressing recipe from Genius Kitchen.

@sallypup It's very rich - yes, more like a dessert. I think of veggies as the main make-up of a salad.

@much2say I've not seen that interesting post. I'll check it out. Thanks. Ambrosia salad sounds like dessert to me.

@rebelann Your versions of salad are so versatile. You can eat them as just salad or stuff the glop into tasty breads or tortillas. Score!

Some people do interpret salads differently than we do, but that must have been a fun wellness day!

Usually cold with mixed vegetables. I don't like carrots in things. By themselves only.

That sounds like a fun salad contest to go too, think of the possibilities! My mom used to make the jello and carrots strips as well, I didn't care for it either. lol

When I hear salad I think about veggies. When there is fruit, I call it fruit salad. then we got chicken & tuna salad. Yes there are many salads.

I think some people think just mixing a bunch of stuff together is a salad. . . think of pasta "salad" or potato "salad". Ambrosia "salad". Stuff like that. I tend to think of salad as more of a vegetable/greens based thing myself. . . at least for something that a wellness committee would want to see.

I used to think salad was all raw veggies and fruits but now there seem to be so many variations
