Possums, preschool children, and rabies

I know this is a terrible picture, but it's one I took the other day at the preschool (with someone else's unfamiliar cell phone). This a possum on top of the fence by our garden. He was moving unusually slowly, and didn't seem afraid of us, so I was a bit wary. But he also was the cutest possum I'd ever seen (I failed to capture that) and wasn't hissing, or engaging in other angry possum behaviors. But he was also drooling! I had the kids stay behind me took a picture with my co-worker's cell phone, but must have pressed too hard and jiggled the thing. I later Googled "drooling possum" and discovered that a drooling (as compared to frothing) possum does not indicate rabies. It's actually one of the many defenses (including, famously, playing dead) that possums use to avoid predators. Predators will shy away from prey that looks "ill." Life is for learning! Have you ever encountered an animal that made you wary?

Yeah. You can see the critter. I lest some better (generic) images on @Maluse's comment. I wonder if my picture comes into focus better from 10 feet away, like some Monet paintings. Heh.

None of those elicit that much fear.

That is a cute one. Just as racoons but i am very weary of both but not as i am with snakes and rats, they both could disappear forever

Raccoons are so blasted bold. They scare me a bit as well.

A few dogs that looked ready to attack, and some geese that can get aggressive but generally most animals here are quite harmless

Geese can get pretty aggressive when you stumble upon their nests.

I'm glad you kept the kids behind you, pony ... It might not look good if several kids had possum teeth marks on their hands/arms or feet/legs, when you were posing as the 'responsible adult'. (A horse can be the responsible adult, right?) *smiling* I told you about my encounter with a rabid skunk when I was running home one night when I was around 11 years old.

I don't remember the rabid skunk story. Do tell. I'm glad this possum was just doing what possums do

Does a dog's jaw in my kneecap count? I had that encounter when I visited a neighbor when I was living on Guam. I felt sorry for the person as they had to put the dog in quarantine to make certain it didn't have rabies. While I got stitches. She had just had a litter, so she was protective. It's good to know the possum doesn't have rabies.

Protective is good. Biting neighbors' knees is punishable by .22 in my book. But maybe not.

@TheHorse Nah, .22 not necessary. She was protecting her pups.

I've encountered many possums and they are not the prettiest creatures. I've seen them play possum and also the hissing which is far scarier. Glad that one wasn't in defensive more so you and the children weren't in danger.

I just had them stay behind me and talked gently to the possum. I'm glad it ultimately climbed down on the other side.

I actually had a kid attacked my a Canada Goose once when her mom let her (the child) get between the goose and her babies.
