Dubai.. Oh what a city..

Just returned from a 12 day trip to Dubai..Even though it is a Muslim country it is quite liberal with most of the things however the laws are strict and fines are steep. The most remarkable thing was the sparsity of law enforcement. I found just a few handful of policemen throughout the city. Visited all the tourist places but also took a trip to Sharjah and Ajman which are not so touristy but trust me Ajman beach is way better and way cleaner than the much hyped Jumeirah of Dubai. Turns out immigrants over there are interested in politics back at their homes. Pakistan general elections were a hot topic in the Pakistani community there. As I myself am a political buff we shall discuss this later. If you intend to visit Dubai the best time would be December to February as the weather is pleasant and the famous Dubai Shopping Festival is underway.

@hereandthere Just some souvenirs generally however I did buy a couple of LED TVs from Abu Dhabi way back in 2012 as it was quite cheap than in my home country and also duty free. But in genral you will find most of the products either made in China or made in India which is generally the case everywhere hence I don't go for that type of stuff. However in Dubai shopping fest you can find specialty items from almost all over the world.

Not by American standards I guess. You get a can of coke for 3.5 dirhams i.e $1 so not that expensive and also due to a huge influx of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi diaspora the prices are generally in line with what they can afford.

I have some friends in Dubai and they said that only to rent a place to live is very expensive, the rest is really cheap.

I really liked reading about your 12 day trip to Dubai. I am keen to visit Dubai in the future. I would be able to fly there cheaply on budget airline. From Dubai I am keen to pop over to Oman which is a neighbouring country.
