August Starts With A Celebration

Today 1st of August is the "Swiss National Day". On this day the Nation celebrates the creation of the Swiss Confederation, back in 1291.
The month of August gets its name from the Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar. In several countries, this is the hottest month of the year.
The birthstones of the month are peridot and the onyx, the flowers the gladiolus and poppy.
Among the many "unofficial" celebrations during this months, I am sharing some:
9th - Book Lover’s Day (this is for me)
13th - International Left-handers Day - celebrate if you feel discriminated
15th - Relaxation Day - I will, I surely will.
18th - National Bad Poetry Day - try your chance, write a poem
26th - Women equality day - an important day to celebrate
We have a saying for this month:
"If the first week in August is unusually warm, the coming Winter will be snowy and long."
Well, this is the case, it's unusually hot and I do not like the idea of a snowy and long winter.
Any special plan for this month of August?
The picture is the Google Doodle for the Swiss National Day.

Happy Swiss National Day
I write Bad poems all the time any way
See that bit rhyme
Doesn't happen every time
The line after this for example
Doesn't rhyme at all and it's far too long to scan with the rest of the poem, ruining the whole thing

@arthurchappell It has been the most quiet 1st of August I can remember. A strong thunderstorm has started around 8 PM and has lasted until early morning. After all I appreciated.

@MarshaMusselman When we were young in Italy (Catholic country) the left hand was considered "the hand of the devil", the teachers did not allow kids to write or eat using that hand. I can use both, because of the accident I had to my right arm, I was unable to use my right arm for almost 2 years.

I am also left-handed but I don't feel discrimination because of it. If anyone gives me grief I just tell them at least that makes me smarter than they are. I'm sure you've heard why that is before?

I don't like that saying either as it is quite warm today. The weekend will be very warm, higher than 40 C. So my goal for August is to survive the heat.

Happy Swiss National Day! For us, there is not a whole lot of celebrating this month (except that my family still needs to celebrate July birthdays ). The kids start school in a couple weeks. A left handers day - well I should celebrate that one!

No special plan but today August 2 is the day two of my friends were born. One lives in Canada now and the other is busy as a school administrator. I will send them my greetings later. On the 11th, is my French friend's birthday and these days he's one of my closest friends even though we live far from each other. 14th there's another birthday, she was one of my closest friends back in law school and she's in Switzerland now. She's married to a Swiss. Finally, the 25th is supposed to be my mothers 73rd birthday. It makes me wonder how she might have looked like if she were alive.

@toniganzon My mother did not change a lot until the age of 80, only the last few years she looked like an old lady.

You have many celebrations for the month of August. It was a quiet 1st of August yesterday here in Switzerland, due to the heat wave in many Cantons fireworks were not allowed, I do not know if they had a better celebration where your closest friend lives. Your mother would still look very pretty, I am sure.

Very nice write about August. My plan is to enjoy the last unofficial month of Summer. At least at the Jersey Shore we kind of look at it that way. By Labor Day "That's All Folks."

@LadyDuck I agree. Here, even with the warm weather it gets darker earlier and earlier and I can just sense a change.

this is great. thanks for the educational information.
here in my country, August has a week celebrated as "Linggo ng Wika" or the week of celebrating our national language. when i was in my senior collegiate level, i won 2nd place in an oratorical contest, of which the results were already decided before i did my piece.

Happy National Day! It is so amusing that there is a Bad Poetry Day! It encourages aspiring poets to try and try till they improved their craft.
