Leadership Essentials

Have you ever been in a situation where you were tasked to lead a group of people who used to be your colleagues, your batchmates, your senior (age) or your previous superiors? Have you been assigned to lead a group built from scratch in a workplace setting? I’ve been in these situations and I admit it wasn’t all a walk in the park. My failures and successes, everything that I learned along the way, those were the things that I employed to be able to build the strong team that I have now. In an industry where numbers and performance is a top priority, how did I create a team of flexible individuals and a tight group of top performers? After everything that I’ve been through, I’ve discovered that the one thing that you need is finding that fine line between leadership and friendship. I have become a leader amongst a group whose members I consider my closest friends. Finding that right mix of authority, charisma and fun was all that I needed. Now, despite the ever dynamic workplace we have, we have built a strong core group which supports each member to reach the top. With this in mind, what have I achieved so far? 1. I have a team of top performers, and a top performing team all in all. 2. Some of my people have been promoted to higher positions. 3. In an industry where many people leave abruplty without a trace, we celebrate and send off the few people leaving our team as they are facing a new chapter in their life or was offered a better opportunity outside the company. 4. Tardiness and absenteeism is not an issue. 5. Productivity and quality are topnotch. And most important of all... 6. A group of friends whom I can share and trust my life with, in and out of the office. Certainly, there are many things that I still have to learn to better myself as a leader. There were also a lot of other things that were substantial to my success. But I believe that my philosophy, my integrity and my ability to share and influence people should forever be constant no matter where I am in my career. “Be the boss you want your boss to be.” :)

That is definitely true. Everything, from accomplishments to violations, is your pride and responsibility. I guess that’s where proper delegation of tasks comes in. That does not only mean that you divide tasks amongst your people, but being vigilant enough to determine who to give them to. That way, you have less effort but get faster results, and you are able to develop your people to be the future leaders as well. :)

Ahaha! Hey there Allen. I used the term “boss” in my attempt to quote someone. But I really don’t wanna be called a boss. It’s one of those things that create a barrier amongst teams. Afterall, we are all just the same people, only that we have been assigned different tasks to do. :)

Please don’t get me weing. I don’t have everything figured out just yet. But from a team delivery standpoint, I must say I couldn’t ask for more. :) I hope they wouldn’t do that to me as they most probably hope I won’t do any of that to them either. Respect begets respect. Of that ever happens, it’s their loss. How? Well, they will lose someone who is genuinely after their success. So I don’t really think of it that much. :)

I have been in similar situations before. I know some of my friends were not happy but I concentrated on the task at hand.

That’s you being awesome! :) Being happy at work is a personal decision. When I feel some pressure around me, I always employ the 90/10 rule. 10% of my life os what happens to me. 90% of is is how I react. I’m not always successful at this and there are times that I tend to let my emotions get the better of me. But I try to remind myself of this and make myself be surrounded by people who can help me remember it as well. :)
