Do you have favorites, take sides in sports?

I have been following many sports actively right from my childhood. I have my favorites among the players and I do not know why I choose one over the other. It is made subconsciously.
If my favorites lose then I too lose interest in the tournament though I follow to see who the winners are. I am not a lifetime follower of certain teams though I like few among them.
I want to be impartial and let the better player/team win, but I still feel a certain sense of loss if my favorites lose.
That extends to other areas too. We like some more than others. This can even lead to arguments among family members and friends.
How about you? Do you also have favorites in sports, actors etc.?

@Shiva49 In world cup football 2018, I wanted England to reach final, since they were playing so well.
Yet they lost in the semifinal.

The recent world cup football made many football pundits.
I did not have a favorite in terms of team or players but a news item caught my eye afterward to make Kylian Mbappé my hero.
France’s 19-year-old wunderkind donated his World Cup winnings to charity What he said touched me "one should not be paid for playing for the country". The world will be a much better place if it is a new trend - siva

What makes few our favorites is intriguing.
It may be we can resonate with their demeanor and behavior.
Graeme Pollock is one of my most favorite cricketers and the cricketing world is a loser that he was out of action not due to his fault while at his prime - siva

I don't follow many sports but sometimes a player makes a name for himself and I find myself watching his progress in the various competitions. I have always really admired the tennis champions, Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal. They seem such nice people with no airs and graces. I really admire them both.

@JudyEv and Djokovic, who won the recent US open too is a great player.
And I liked Boris Becker's playing style too.
Then we had Pete Sampras, Stefan Edberg, Mats Wilander and the great Indian player Leander Paes.

Tennis is one of the games I have been following for over fifty years.
Federer and Nadal are class acts, just different from Connors and McEnroe (Mac in Row always!).
I recall Aussie players Laver and Rosewall; the latter was my childhood favorite.
Then Margaret Court - siva

Oh yes, part of the fun of sports is rooting for your favorite teams. It adds to the enjoyment of viewing the sport. When my team is winning I am happy, if they lose I am disappointed.

It's an interesting topic.
Why do some people have sports heroes, or actor heroes, or even comic book heroes, as I myself had, with the phantom, when I was a boy?
Why do we choose a particular side as our favourite side in some sports?
I myself have become tired and weary of having any heroes now, and have lost all interest in them. I have no favourites now that I follow, but I keep a distant interest, just to keep pace with what's happening in the world, so I won't feel too isolated, by it all.
I guess the enemy of every hero is the complacent follower, like me, and the hero should generally try not to lose their followers.
Followers can be lost by heroes becoming unmasked, and this happens by them stepping over the line of what we think a hero should be like.
When we have been let down too many times, we do become weary then, and let go of most of these "idle, or more perhaps idol" pursuits of our own fantasies in heroes.

We all seem to have this fantasy of wanting to be a superhero.

@Shiva49 oh I was not aware that Malcolm Marshall is no more.
His pace and swing was terrific.
He was India's nemesis many times, especially in tests.

@Shiva49 Ha, ha. No, I am no typical aussie. Even my accent is European, I have been told, by others, who often mistake me for being a European person.
Maybe, I have some karma there, as my Dad used to say that we have French relatives, and that Marshall, or ma cheval, means, or derives, from a horse, in the French language.

@innertalks Then you aren't a typical Aussie going by this quote from Quora about what an American, of all people, had to say:
"Another thing that surprised me is that Australians tend to swear quite a lot. I think Americans are too uptight about swearing, but it still surprised me to hear my supervisor at work throwing around curse words at meetings."
I have never smoked but I did give a few some company in my younger days with a drink.
I don't gamble but I buy some lottery tickets with an altruistic take I can donate "most" of winnings to charity! That means I qualify to win!
I am inspired by real-life heroes who sacrifice so much to help others. They rise above material pursuits to serve humanity - siva

Manchester United has a great following all over the world.
They had a legendary coach, Alex Ferguson, whose methods worked but a hard act to follow; he wanted total obedience.
The consequences, otherwise, were clear; you know what happened to David Beckham! siva

Well, I do have favorites- sometimes a full team, or sometimes individuals in a game or sport, say an Aussie cricket player, or a Kiwi fast bowler and so on.
In life, I try to be impartial. Yet situations are highly ideal and often we have to take sides.

@Shiva49 even I too.
In school times, I even had a tiff or two with a few bullying types, once it could have turned a fatal punch with punch fight but some friends intervened.
