Vitamins...how much do we really need?

I mean most things are individual needs in life. Many times I can't really eat because of digestive issues. But still I realize I live with others that may need to eat, so I tell them use some of my money if they are out and get something to eat if no one feels like cooking because I sure can't cook any more anyway.
When my daughter is off work, she often cooks but she is not off very often. I love it when she is.
I digress anyway, I drink this breakfast drink all most every day. I mix mine with water and can only drink vanilla flavored, but that's just me. people think I am pretty weird But I feel it is best to keep on top of things at my age when you are not well any how.
How do you make sure you get your vitamins. ?

I make sure that I eat plenty of fresh vegetables every day. I'm not someone that just eats meat and carbs or just carbs. I have green veggies every single day multiple times per day. I have fruit some times each week as well. A well-balanced, varied diet is a great way to make sure that you are getting what you need. sooooooo, I don't need a vitamin supplement per se. I do take Vitamin D, though, as I've read that it is pretty common for women to be deficient in that.

yes. i used to figure i was just eating plenty. but now i can only eat what i have access to and times i can not walk all the way to the fridge or cabinet and no one is up or around to bring me something. so to make sure my body is getting enough i drink the vitamins in this drink.

@bunnybon7 A multivitamin would probably be better.

@NJChicaa no. i used to take those even though they are hard to swallow for me and found out they are really bad for my system. too much of something, not sure what is in them

I think we should get all the vitamins from food. I think that is the best. I do take a b12 since I am mostly vegetarian.

Need to have milk three times a day. I often don't get the amount of vitamins I need. Even when I took vitamins they didn't seem to do me any good. I felt no different. Makes a person wonder.

not sure why. i just know doctor tells me i need to make sure and get more in my body cause i have lost too much weight . big problem is my digestion issues. also, i got out of the milk habit years ago when the kids were little. we barely had money for food most of the time and when we bought milk , i gave it to them . i figured they needed that to grow strong.

Well I eat a lot of canned soup because it's easy and can get a variety. There are a series of Vitamin B's that I take but the one that is most important is magnesium supplement. It was explained to me that magnesium helps our bodies filter out our foods. Taking in the good and sorting out the bad stuff. I avoid breads and love lettuce salad with raw veggies, but soup is my main stay.

maybe i should look into magnesium . do you avoid bread because of gluten?
@bunnybon7 (50973)

@kprofgames it's probably gluten because that is what i have heard is hard on digestion.

@bunnybon7 I just don't feel good after eat processed breads. Store bought, or a hoggie/subsandwich at a store. If I make it myself, I don't get that heavy feeling like I just tried to digest a rock. Might be the gluten or the additional preservatives that you get in breads that are purchased.

I take vitamin D and Vitamin E daily, again. I stopped for a couple months but I am back on them.
Yes if you do not eat like everyone else I recommend an Ensure daily, it has what a body needs.

most everyone has to these days since our food is so processed and messed up with not enough vitamins like years ago. unless we grow and make all our own.

that's good. i used to care give an elderly retired nurse years ago and she used to say the same thing. we need to eat the right things and we don't have to take vitamins. my problem is having access since my daughter works a lot and seldom likes to cook and i am not able. so times i don't get good meals on time. so i drink this breakfast drink. which also goes okay on my stomach.

@bunnybon7 That's weird. My doctor wants me on multi-vitamins since I've had leukopenia for about three years. Yeah it does for me since I have a peeled nose (and not from sunburn.)

might be a good idea if you don't eat much and they don't bother your digestion.

I am awful for missing breakfast! I like to have breakfast bars (especially from Dollar Tree) or a Slim-Fast shake or I even have Carnation Breakfast (like you have but chocolate). I need quick small things.

I used to skip it also and did not worry over vitamins but now I get told I must have extra of some even though I don't have a busy life style at all. guess it depends on where you are in life and what you need.

@Spontaneo that would be best. maybe try powdered milk and only make what you need a little at a time. I know it doesn't taste as good but won't spoil at least

@bunnybon7 The milk in stores where I live just is not too good. When I lived back home with family the milk was always good while growing up. I would rather get calcium through milk as opposed to calcium supplements.

V8 is very good. i also relied on that for a while. the tomato in it though began to bother my stomach having it every day so i quit for a while. i should go back to that alternately .

we used to use the vanilla and chocolate packets from them in our homemade milkshakes, when my brother had to gain weight as a kid.. and my mom sometimes gets the drinks - but only in chocolate.
I don't make sure.. as I don't take vitamins, or drink stuff like this or anything. just eat lol
