1. ask him why he started calling you 'dear'
2. after hearing it, tell him how you feel about it.
3. give him a list of names you prefer

I don't consider "dear" a "friend" word at all. It means you are dear to him, as a wife should be. My father often referred to my mother as "dear". For that matter, I have never had a friend call me "dear".

Really? Because here such term is a term of endearment and it's being used by couples toward each other. But if you have that feeling, I think it's best to ask your husband about it.

It's a very natural thing to call your spouse in our country. If you do not feel comfortable then let him know

I think it's sweet when your husband calls you dear, for it's a term of endearment to me. Sweetheart too is so sweet to be called by a husband or boyfriend. Maybe your husband is conservative in public, so he calls you dear?
