Well, life is for the living and we can only crave for the best but sometimes we love the bad things which I know it part of life and the only way we can fight it is by self control, which isn't easy.
We indulge in smoking, drinking, gambling, drug abuse etc. This can very difficult to stop. But how can really put a stop to this?

Addiction is well addiction is never goes away. The thought will always be there, the hunger, the wants. You can always find other things to help suppress it, but it just isn't possible to do it completely. Support, is probably the best, always having a person to slap your hand away if you think about it and help you if you if you relapse.

The short answer is, you can't. You can only control what you do, and try to discourage people you know from doing them, but you can't control them and you can't control what anyone else does. Outlawing these things would only make them happen behind closed doors, like a black market. Education is key, making sure children are raised to understand the dangers of these things, so that they can make more intelligent choices early in life.
