the elevator was under repair so someone accompanied us to the service elevator.
as in, that area at the back where the delivery trucks go.
when we came out at the correct floor, we were told to just follow the exit signs.
however, this long narrow corridor turned left, right several times it felt like we were in a maze.
then there was one corner where it was so narrow the wheelchair just couldn't pass through.
thankfully, a female employee happened to be there with an empty grocery cart.
we decided mother would stand up and hold on to the grocery cart while we lifted the wheelchair over the concrete curb/bump curb at the base of the walls.
you could see so many scratches and chips on both walls, while the paint on the concrete at the bottom has worn off,
evidence that that part of the passageway is just too narrow for the many things that have passed through there "behind the scenes" that most people don't see.
i wish we had wheelchair-accessible escalators here, so the general public don't have to use the service elevators and go through the "winding secret alleys" inside buildings.
do you have escalators for wheelchairs when the elevator is out of service?

I think it would be quite risky to have a wheelchair escalator. A ramp would be a better alternative.

@hereandthere That would be good exercise for you hehehe! Seriously, I was just thinking of one floor :) I'm sure too that a mall would have several elevators so you have the option to go to another one when the other is out of order.

@sunrisefan no option at that building. just the service elevator.
i've seen escalators like that in the picture i attached. as you can see the "step" where the wheelchair is, is different from the ones above and below it. i think it's equivalent to 3 steps together so it's like a platform.

@hereandthere You can see the photo. There are no steps, you can go up with the shopping carts or a wheelchair. All the escalators inside our malls are like those ones.

Now that is something that Mall owners should think. How about the flat escalator which was design to assist shop goers. I'm sure that would a great idea to add them for the people who uses wheelchair

That sounds awful for your mom! I've never heard of a wheelchair accessible escalator though. One time the elevator in a big department store was broken and we since my kids were in a double stroller we had to use the big freight elevator. It was enormous and was an interesting experience.

No, we don't have that here. How i wish there are.
One time when our father had his birthday celebration at a big mall here, he was carried by the security guards because the elevator suddenly wasn't working. It was heart warming that the two security guards and my nephew carried the wheelchair with my father on it.

we had to use the big service/delivery elevator twice because when we were there again after 3 days, it was still out of order.

Most places here do not have any of that. I know my old elementary school had a very very small service elevator, I got to ride in it once as it as it was never used ever, it wasn't as exciting as our kid brains thought it was going to be.

i experienced it in one office i worked at, it wasn't different to the "public" one. but this is the first time we experienced riding the big one for deliveries. wasn't pleasant, to be honest.

I have never seen one before. It sounds like a logical thing to have in a public setting.

just like a conveyor? like in airports? maybe an escalator meant for those on wheelchairs should be suggested to the builders of an establishment.

I didn't know there was a escalator for wheelchairs. We have ramps and elevators.

Your post reminded me of the time I had to push my baby's stroller shopping in big shopping plazas and the lift didn't work. It was a nightmare! Traveling with babies to Singapore was not a fun time either with many stores/plazas there had no ramp whatsoever. (The kids are all giant people now! Thanks be to God!)
