Data usage - huh?

I have just moved from a remote community to a more populated town. Suddenly, I notice my data usage on my iPhone has increased and so has my monthly cost. Obviously this does not suit me at all. So, who do I call?
Why is this happening? Is there a setting I can adjust?

The settings menu found on our smartphone allows users to check which applications are accessing data. We can also apply settings to stop applications that consume a lot of data.
On the iPhone itself, open the Settings menu, then select Mobile Data to see applications that are allowed to use data, just turn off the application if we don't use it.
While on Android choose Settings, then select Data Usage, then open each application that we want to turn off.

Any application must be using data. I'm sure your settings will let you know about the defaulter

I'm sorry I can't help and Vince isn't here to ask but I know on his some apps keep using data even if the phone is switched off. Others seem to have given good advice too so I hope something works.
