What exactly does "like" a comment DO?

I mean it is a nice thing to do to acknowledge a person, but I consider responding to them better.
So what is the purpose of a LIKE? Do these get a tally at the end of the year and a person wins an award? joking, sorry, I'm twisted.
Just wondering the purpose.

the person whose actions here I liked will certainly benefit from that, but I won't. So I always respond to a discussion that I find interesting. I just ignore and don't even bother to like those that doesn't catch my attention.

I think with the volume that is seen here it would be next to impossible to response to everything. Hmmm, might be a goal for a raining day, but I am with you on responses.

@kprofgames It's impossible to response to everything here because not everything here is interesting at all,

It can do a few things.
Primarily it shows you like something
It will also earn something for the person receiving a like.
It can also be an acknowledgement that you've read something.
Sometimes in a discussion you'll get a lot of responses and some can be similar so you've already said all you've got to say with previous comments.
Instead of ignoring the responses giving a like shows you've read it.

The number of likes determines the "Top Rated Discussions".
It let's you know that someone is acknowledging a discussion or a comment you made.
It gives you a notification.
You also earn from likes.
