social media attention

I have come across this post shared by my friend and everyone was so angry in the comments. The post was about this woman saying that her ex boyfriend and his live in partner is abusing their little boy. She was cursing at them for causing the child to be hospitalized suffering from such abuse, his face is swollen, the kid was barely 5 yo. I get it, there is social media - but I am appalled by how she reacted and took action. She is asking for people to help him go to the radio/tv media station and expose her ex. She has all the evidences about the child being beaten up but she instead chose social media - facebook to be exact instead of going straight to the police and file a case against the two and get her son out of his custody. Seriously, what is wrong with these people? I mean Why in the world would you choose to go to SNS instead of the authorities to legally take your child out of danger. It so appears that she is instead more interested in the attention she will get in the social media than her son's safety. She has got her priorities wrong! Poor child having a father that beats him up, and a mother that is a fame wh*re!

This is very weird. Especially when they are tagging police, gov't pages. Do they think policemen are 24/7 online to check complaints? Will like, share and comments save the poor child? Videos should be shown to the authorities and not to fellow citizens to gain attention. It's like uploading a video of an open wound and expecting the hospitals to knock in your doorstep.

But taking the right way can sometimes be frustratingly slow. Getting the attention of both the public and the media can sometimes make it faster than doing the usual reporting at the police and the police would act slow.

exactly my point. the poor child has suffered enough. I do not even think both parents should be given the chance to take care of the child becuase they both seemed irresponsible at this point. the one is just blaming and complaining (in the social media) but never got out of her house to just pick up the child and bring her home. it would have never escalated to such a situation. she even posted that the child had broken legs before.

They want to get famous on Social Media. That is the trend nowadays. People are craving for attention and use Social Media even if they look awful.

I really cannot understand that one - why would they even want to be famous in social media... what would they get out of it, anyway?

@JustBhem ohh but it does not directly translate to anything. its temporary.. so broadcasting your life's problems for instant gratification... :( The word is so messed up.

@chiyosan I think likes, shares, and comment. Some people tend to feel great about it.

Not that I am siding with the mother, taking legal action here in our country can sometimes be very frustratingly slow. Sometimes the assailant would be long gone before any legal action is taking place. With Social Media it can get almost instant attention to both media and the public in general and at many times the action taken by authorities is also fast because of that. It has now becoming a trend this days that many fell victim or hero because of this attention seeking videos that calls for attention or justice depending on how you take it.

I get that it can get the public's attention, but to think of posting first on social media before actually going to the address of your former boyfriend to get the child is insane. I would think that you go to social media if you have taken the first steps, and you never got around to it. I heard from my mom that as she asked for help to be featured in a radio show, she was only on the phone - but never showed up in the show itself. It was even the boyfriend's sister who went and brought the child over. Its really gotten ridiculous.

@rsa101 i just hope the child will be put to a good home instead of any of them. it was already hard being beaten up like that and to know you are going to your mom who is living with another man must be stressful yet again for him. im sure the poor kid is traumatized.

@chiyosan Yes I do agree with you on that note. But I guess most are resorting to this because of the system being slow. It has its negative and positive points.

indeed, she could have gone to the police herself.. and if they ignored her.. then she can go on social media or other even the radio

sometimes people just need to get out really. what would she do if there weren't social media? I wish that the baby is in good hands now.

@lady1993 poor child, so as it turned out, the woman is already living with another man a new boyfriend so that is why she is not able to immediately go and is still thinking if she can afford to take care of the child.

i have argued with some including my own sister about posting something private on social media. i think people who do that are stupid

They are not thinking straight, that is correct. and can be really stupid too! social media is powerful, yes we get it, but there is also a correct venue for everything and in this case, i do not think it is social media. We should really be conscious about what we share online, especially something like this. Once you share it online, there is no delete, no undoing it.

@mesbakh Indeed! people need to draw the line between what is shareable and what must be kept private. I think nowadays people are just after the comments, the likes and how their post gets viral.

@chiyosan i am trying to keep space or privacy. it means i just share what is "eligible" know by other and i keep my pricay just for me only. it doesnt make any point sharing or complaining about our privacy or our problem

This is when they want to gain attention from people from their list. If it is something very personal or sensitive, it should not be posted. Well, anyway we can't control them.

absolutely, we can't control other people's actions. its just that seeing this bothered me and angered me. no point actually but i wished people will be less like this now. Hope they don't go around social media seeking attention, and instead do something more worthwhile.

@chiyosan It's a common scenario especially in FB. I just ignore it when I see it in my timeline.

Yes, I have seen this before as well and it does frustrate me especially knowing sometimes they have not done the steps to press charges, etc or even gladly will go back with the person who has done it. Or they move out and make such a Big scene on Social Media and start a GoFundMe page as well. I agree there are always better ways to handle things

There have been more than a few instances that I wondered if the post I've read on social media is true. If this child is in the hospital, as said, then the medical team would contact the law. This would be investigated. This just makes no sense to me.

This one is confirmed, and as per the local media (she got attention, yup) went and still see the child in there. the hospital has not contacted the officials yet, but i think since this happened in the Philippines - the child was with his father and was not reported to authorities right away. They are doing an investigation now in the other hospital the child was taken to for another injury (broken legs) because he was there but that hospital never reported any abuse.

she does seem like that, she should have really just tried to get custody of the child because the child is below 7yo so it is sure she will get him if she wanted to.

that is more of what i really think and what even her friends on the comment think. she acted so helpless asking for help in social media, but she did not even lift a finger to get to where her son is.

Well, I hope that the child would be safe and the Mother should be reprimanded from her mistake.

Wow! I agree with you. It's a shame when people reach out on social media instead of taking action themselves. So sad.

It is. I hope that the situation will be better for the child though now that it has gotten a lot of attention. it really seemed as though both parents are not fit to be the child's guardian.

@chiyosan I'm glad to hear that. I wish the child would be sent to guardians who will love and care for him/her. Poor child.
