Beyond the stealing of each others work, it has of course a positive effect on Art. I’ve seen artists I would have never seen without the internet, sites like deviantart.com (although it was better when it wasn’t so commercial) go along way to promoting art from unknown artists.

The Internet is a very good tool for exposure. Because people can be multi-profession, thus acquiring an added unique insight to various issues, I think only an unwise person would be so stupid as to steal the works of another.
I scribble, and because of my multi-profession background, tend to deduct matters from several angles at once, which often leave others dumbfounded as to how I perceive matters. Now, anyone stealing my works will be in deep trouble if challenged to explain the contents. Therefore, if I cannot find a publisher smart enough to see the depth of the works, I dread not to share my findings and/or inspirations with those who which to be informed in advance.

If you place a logo/watermark on your art, there is less of a chance your work will be clamed by someone else. I feel that overall is a positive for the simple fact that you can get alot of exposure.
