Wax in Apples

I love apples. I eat it every now and then. I usually rub the skin with a knife to remove the fruit wax. I try to scratch off as much as I can. In the photo, it seemed like I can make a small candle if I'll scratch 5 apples more. Have you tried doing the same?

I peel all fruit nowadays. They put too much pesticides in them.

That was my family doctor's advise too, not unless we buy it from organic market.

@moichan I´d rather peel them. Organic products are much too expensive. I peel tomatoes, fruit. I wash in water with a drop of chlorine all greens.

I've learned something new - I didn't realise that apples were waxed.

I was surprised when I learned too. I never imagined that shiny apples were waxed.

No, I do not eat the skin for some reasons like avoiding unwanted chemicals in it. We do not know how they handle the fruit to make it last long. Or you can just wash it well.

The wax can't be removed by plain water rinse.

Is it really wax or just some oil which the fruit vendors rub on apples and other fruits to make them look fresh and attractive to buyers? We buy apples sometimes but we have not experienced having wax on them. We do wash the apples thoroughly, and any other fruit for that matter, before we eat them.

The wax is honestly too thick to all the apples I've bought so far. It won't hurt to be extra careful especially if we have to serve it to kids.

I clean the apples a lot and then eat them. It's difficult to get organic fruits where I stay. This waxy thing is scary if it's artificial.

It is really scary. I scraped the apple for few minutes in that photo. I found a video on how I did it.

Oh my, I wasn't doing that at all every time I eat an apple. I just wash it and rub it vigorously while washing it under the faucet.

It was mine. I scraped it like a scratch card. You can try doing the same when you buy a very shiny apple.

Hello @moichan I rather eat them than use it as wax. Unless some one made an apple candle.

We live in the middle of an apple-growing area so we're able to buy apples unwaxed. I guess it helps keep them fresh but I'm not that keen on the idea.

I think so too and you're pretty lucky to have access in buying unwaxed apples.

I'm not sure. Yes in all I've bought so far. I haven't seen an apple without thick wax.
