Have you eaten an expired food before? If not, will you?

Okay, so yesterday, I cooked hotdogs and mom and I ate it with a loaf. it was kind of tasteless so we took out the mayonnaise in the fridge and finished eating. Mom said the mayo doesn't taste delicious anymore and will not buy the said brand. okay so then she joked about it could have been expired. So yah, I checked out the bottle. and yes it is indeed expired about a month ago!
It was so funny and well, it is the first time that i have eaten an expired food. If i have consumed some before, i am not informed or have not been aware of it.
I remember my officemate telling me last time that if its just a month or so, they still eat it especially if they are sealed anyway - like canned goods or packed fruits or meat and biscuits.
Before this, we are really conscious about expiry dates and this is the first time i have not checked about the date of expiry, to be honest.
So, Have you ever knowingly eaten an expired food? =)

I've eaten lots of expired food and do so regularly. It depends on the items. It depends on how well it was stored and where I got it. I imagine this varies from country to country as well. We call it a best before date here in Canada in most cases. It is usually safe to go past it by a small margin as long as it has been properly stored. Some items last a whole lot longer than the recommended date though.

yes, this is what my friend told me that since its best before date, it is still good after the date printed. hehe but yah kidding aside, it was still okay and does not show any visible sign of spoilage - it just tastes a bit bland... not sure if its my tastebud or what.

@chiyosan If something like mayo starts to taste a bit different, we'll usually get rid of it unless it's the fake stuff. We don't have any in the fridge right now.

I have eaten expired food. But I do taste it a bit before eating it. Usually, what I eat expired are foods that have not been opened, like yogurts and the like.

I see, sometimes we feel its a waste not to consume the food even if they have expired. but be careful with them, alright? hehe sometimes when i check for food, especially bread even if i do not taste them - i will check it out physically to make sure i do not see any molds or what. expiry in some packaging can be tricky too. we are not sure if they have been extended by some sellers. and such has happened already to us before.

@scarlet_woman oops, next time we will check first before eating those in the fridge or kept in the counter. sometimes we bought them months ago seeing their expiry is too far away but it gets to a point where it catches up. hehe

i think its okay to be cautious, especially if you have a weak stomach. hehe i guess ours was a bit stronger cause it was even a month after the product has expired. i even had a generous spread of the mayo on my hotdog and on the bread. =) hehe

well maybe it depends on the handling as well, i think Mayo is still okay even if it is a little over the expiration period. maybe it was not in a cool place or storage. because if the Mayo is not expired when it is not stored in a cooler storage it may taste different.
good thing you did not feel bad after.

Hi Mavic, nope we were okay. no bad tummy afterwards =) We stored the mayonnaise in the fridge. i guess it was pushed all the way back and we forgot about it. but then at least when i ate hotdogs and wanted some mayo on it, i purposely find it cause i remember having seen a bottle once before. hehe but yah after eating, it turned out to be expired. haha

@Mavic123456 Yesss it was opened and we consumed half of it already but it was still in the fridge being not all consumed, hehe it wasn't too bad really. its like when you are feeling sick you have no taste at all? even if you know the food is good. So i thought it was just like that - my tongue failing me, hehe

@chiyosan good to know that you were all fine. I don't think Mayo will have a bad taste after expiration for a month. Maybe it's opened already.

I do not buy expired food. When I buy my groceries, I'll take time to see on the expiration date. I also heard of my colleague before that she have an acquaintance who buy expired canned goods as it was offered in cheaper price from a promo personnel. They got hospitalized after.

oh! i do not buy expired foods myself, the mayo was kept for a long time in our fridge i guess and we haven't used it often that it was still in the ref past expiry date. :D If food is on sale, we do not buy them too, because if it is near expiry and we are not able to eat it, it is only a waste of money too even if it was cheap.

I am sure everyone has had this experience a time or two. It is hard to not do so unless you are always checking dates on stuff, as I know we have many times.

I usually stay within the expiration date as there is a reason they warn us. Better safe than sorry, they say.

@chiyosan I have a feeling that the food is still good after the expiration date but I can't say at what point it might be a health hazard and so will respect it.

oh, was it a bread of some sort? This could be the case for some restaurants or shops who are not conscious of their food products. i think they should watch out for this too - causing food poisoning is serious and they can get their license and business permits revoked.

@May2k8 ahhh that is too bad! They really should no be selling those! They should have take it out of the shelf. In my case, i remember having bought a pastry bread. it was during the summer so i guess food spoils quickly in such a weather. so when i opened the pastry i thought it had a weird smell. I checked the expiry and it is not due until 3 days later, but it had some molds already. yah so i went back to the bakery and returned it.

yahhh same us me i really was not aware that we consumed an expired mayo. but i have an officemate that brought a whole pack of cupcakes due to expire in 3 days, so she distributed it and had us all eating it before it expires and she said she has done it a lot of times because she is sure there is still an allowance for the date printed. :)

Expired food can be extended upto a month safely I think, especially if it is packaged food. It usually causes no harm. I have eaten and used products sometimes past expiry date since it is a waste to throw away the remaining part based on the date. They usually print the first date of the range of time it takes the food to slowly degrade....but depending on the food, you should exercise precaution as getting food poisoning too is not feasible.

True, the date only tells you a warning that anything beyond that date might have problem with the products quality but it does not mean it cannot be taken anymore. Like in medicines, the quality and the efficacy might not be as effective as those that is not yet expired.
So taking food that has gone beyond the date but is not that far is I guess safe as long as you do not see any mold or the taste differ from the original taste and lastly it has not affected your well being.
But if you would be asking me if I would take it myself. I will not take the risk perhaps especially if it is medicines. Food I might have for as long as I see it edible but if the product is looking different from the original.

Something that comes in a jar that doesn't have to be refrigerated until opened can be eaten after the expiration date. The quality may be fine or noticeably compromised.

I ate noodles and didn't notice it was expired for a year. My husband's aunt gave it to me. I ate a few bites then gave it to my husband because I can't finish it. And there you have it, my husband threw everything up after and had food poisoning. She didn't even bulge to say sorry though she looked like she was sorry. I was pregnant at that time then I promised myself not to eat anything that she will give not unless I see her eating the same food coming from the same container.

@chiyosan it was part of a goodies package from abroad. The language printed in the sachet was very difficult to read but the expiration date was of universal format of course. My fault was I trusted her way too much that I didn't even bother checking the date. Being pregnant, I wanted to eat and taste every cravings I had.
