Here's How Hubby's Birthday Went

Hubby started his day with higher than normal blood pressure. It got as high as 161 by early afternoon. He wasn't sure he should drive or attempt to take the test at DMV. He also had a headache.
In early afternoon he wanted to take a third dose of his medication. I told him to wait until I called the pharmacist, since the instructions say just one dose a day and he had already had two. The pharmacist said that one more would be too many and suggested we go to the ER.
Now who would want to spend a birthday in the ER? I decided to call the cardiologist's medical assistant for a second opinion.
By about 2 PM the pill taken earlier began to kick in. I'd also made sure Hubby had lunch in case we did have to go to the ER. He took his blood pressure again and it had come down to around 140 and he felt better, so he did go to DMV.
At 4 I called the medical assistant back and she said she'd gotten through to Hubby on his cell phone. She confirmed what I had thought. He was OK. No need for the ER. She also told him to only check his blood pressure about every other day instead of t0-15 times a day as he's been doing. He's been obsessed with it. She also told him to take the meds twice a day twelve hours apart.
He made it home from DMV about half an hour after they closed. He came home with a temporary license and can take his written test tomorrow. He did everything else today but there was no time left to do the test. I'm thankful he can drive legally and I hope he can pass his test with no problem. I will have to pray he remembers what he's been studying.
I guess all's well that ends well, and I hope tomorrow will end as well as today. It's such a relief to know that if he needs to drive it will be legal. That will keep my blood pressure from rising.

He did pass the written test yesterday, and I'm rejoicing. I don't take my blood pressure reading very often unless I'm having a problem with symptoms. I see doctors often enough to get it taken professionally. But I can tell you I've very relieved that Hubby can drive himself legally where he wants to go as he has been doing.

Glad to hear he is ok and good luck on his test. Yes if you check your pressure a lot you can find problems with it.

@wolfgirl569 Right. Most psychologists say you should stick with that first guess.

Please tell Kosta that when I worked at a plant where I tested blood pressure monitoring equipment we were prohibited from taking a reading more than twice in each 10 hour shift for health reasons. It is not good for him to put the squeeze on himself that much. Also, happy birthday.

My personal opinion is that it was high because he started trying to treat it with garlic and didn't take the medicine consistently for about two weeks because eating garlic seemed to bring it down. But the effect didn't last as long as medication. Also, he was obsessing about his blood pressure and took it several times a day. Now he's going to take the medicine as prescribed again and still keep eating garlic. He will now take his blood pressure only once every two days -- doctor's orders.

@bagarad I can sympathize with not wanting to take the medication but it is dangerous to do things this way. I did not know that garlic would help with high bp. If he would like another option he can use honey vinegar water. I boil water as I would for hot tea. I let it rest and cool down just a bit and then I add 1 TBSP organic apple cider vinegar (you can buy it cheap at Aldi's) and use honey to sweeten it. When I am having a hard time with my bp I drink this "tea" in the morning before I eat and at night before I go to bed. It does help me.

I have battled high blood pressure for several years now. Stressful situations can lead to these extreme rises in our bp. Was he nervous about the DMV testing?

I still worry some about his driving. You can do everything right and still get into accidents if the other drivers are high or are not used to our driving laws. Not everyone who drives here in California is legal. But at least I know that if he has a problem he's insured because he's driving legally.

I had to double up on my medication, the same way. He will do just fine, once the dosage is high enough in his system. Happy Birthday to your husband, even though his day started out a bit scary!:)
