There has been some debate over the issue of if having a drink or two a day is good or bad for you. Now researchers are stirring up even more controversy by claiming that having a drink a day (for women) or two drinks a day (for men) can lower the risk of coronary artery disease by up to 30 percent. This is the same percentage that exercise lowers the risk. Basically, both drinking moderately and exercising work this way by raising good cholesterol levels and lowering bad cholesterol levels, which helps keep arteries clear and clot-free. But who cares about the science behind it! This news is almost too good to be true. Even better, moderate drinking and exercise combined can lower the risk up to 50 percent, so a balance of both is ideal. Wine is probably the best option, since it's made from grapes and contains high levels of antioxidants, but beer is good, too, also containing antioxidants and B vitamins. Other studies in the past have shown that alcoholic drinks made with fruit even raise the antioxidant levels of the fruits. So if you enjoy strawberry daiquiris, you're in luck. I wonder if this also applies to chocolatinis? The bottom line here is that alcohol can be good for you, especially when combined with exercise and fruit. So go for your daily walk and unwind with the drink of your choice afterwards. But just because these two lifestyle changes are beneficial doesn't mean you can eat a lot of junk. Be sure to include healthy choices in your meals every day, drink plenty of fluids, and take a multi-vitamin. Knowing that you can reward yourself for all these healthy choices with a drink at the end of the day should make it a little easier to stick with them. No one sees the impact of alcoholism more closely than law enforcement. Here's one officer's tips for writing on alcoholism from a criminal justice perspective.
